``I think that's a generous ranking,'' he said. ``We've got to win some more games.''

The division winner earns an automatic bowl berth. The second-place finisher usually goes to a bowl. All Canyons has to do is win its final three games - against Glendale and at Bakersfield and Ventura - to earn the automatic berth.

That's no easy task, especially with injuries mounting. Offensive lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:

``I want to know where we end up in the end,'' Lyon said. ``Our goal is to get into a bowl game.''

Add football: The Cougars are the conference's top scoring team, averaging 39.7 points a game. This week, they took over from Glendale as the No. 1 offensive team, averaging 390 yards a game. Glendale, with a 380-yard average, fell to fourth.

Looking up: It has been a while since Lee Smelser has had reason to look up - at his players and his mood.

As Smelser draws closer to the start of his 30th season as men's basketball coach at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. , he find himself with the tallest group he has had in at least a decade.

Plus, there's 6-7, 245 Jason Youngs, but he won't be available for the season opener because he's on the football team, and its final regular-season game is Nov. 14 at Ventura. The Cougars, if they keep winning, likely will earn a bowl bid, further delaying Youngs' basketball season.

Youngs has a shoulder injury, but Smelser is happy he isn't hampered with a bad knee or ankle.
