But Cougars coach Chuck Lyon has no illusions of the same thing happening today when the two teams meet in Valencia. Not with Pierce coming off a shocking 9-8 upset of previously undefeated Compton week. The resurgent re·sur·gent adj. 1. Experiencing or tending to bring about renewal or revival. 2. Lyon is no fan of the poll, which he views as overly political, as well as the concept of a state championship game, to which the winner of the Southern California Bowl advances. But Pierce (3-5, 2-3) is a much-improved team that ended its four-game losing streak last week in stunning fashion. With 1:06 to play, Pierce freshman linebacker Jeremy Stewart blocked a punt that Michael Burnes recovered in the end zone for the win. Stewart made 15 tackles in the game and was named state defensive player of the week for his effort. Pierce used several quick kicks during the game to pin Compton deep in its own end. Brahmas coach David Banuelos also said his team cut down on the personal foul penalties that cost it several games this season. Pierce's defense, however, will get a tough test against Canyon's offense and sophomore quarterback Kyle Bauer, the state's top rated passer. Even in the steady rain last Saturday, Bauer threw for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Cougars eased past West L.A. ``They've just been an offensive machine,'' Banuelos said. ``And their defense doesn't make very many mistakes. I don't see many weaknesses with them.'' Banuelos will welcome back starting wide receiver Delfino Hernandez, who missed the Compton game with a concussion concussion Period of nervous-function impairment that results from relatively mild brain injury, often with no bleeding in the cerebral cortex. Pierce won last week despite picking up only five first downs. Banuelos added he does not expect his team to back down against Canyons. He made a point of not showing them the tape from last year's game and said confidence is high after the big win against Compton. ``We're going to go out there with the attitude that we can play with those guys,'' Banuelos said. ``If we can play the game we're capable of, then we can shock everybody. We kind of like that role.'' |
