Through their first nine games, the Cougars were 8-1 with a 31-point average margin of victory. Valley College entered the game 2-7 and did not look to be overmatched by the Cougars.

And when Travis Winn connected with Jason d'Autremont on a 13-yard touchdown pass on COC's opening possession, capping a three-play, 43-yard drive, it figured to be a long night for the Monarchs.

But in their worst-played game of the season, the Cougars barely escaped with a 21-20 Western State Conference Northern Division victory.

``We came out flat,'' said COC See chip on chip.  running back Stephen Stokes, who added he thought the team was more worried about a possible bowl berth than its opponents.

Stokes carried the ball on every play in a decisive nine-play, 47-yard scoring drive in the game's closing minutes. He finished the game with 116 yards on 20 carries.

The Cougars improved to 6-1 in their division (9-1 overall) and finished the regular season tied with Allan Hancock College Allan Hancock College is a California public community college located in Santa Maria in northern Santa Barbara County. ``We didn't play very well, but when you can find a way to win when you don't play well, that's the sign of a championship team,'' said COC coach Chuck Lyon.

set up Valley at the Cougars' 14 and led to a field goal that gave the Monarchs a 17-7 lead.

In perhaps its most important drive of the season, the Cougars offensive line came up with a clutch performance, as it paved the way for Stokes on COC's final drive. Stokes eventually scored the winning touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Daily's ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, setting up Valley with a first down at its own 35 with 1:22 and all three timeouts remaining. The Monarchs (2-8, 2-5) got to the COC 31 and attempted a potential game-winning 48-yard field goal in the closing seconds, but the Cougars blocked the kick, preserving the win.
