COC FOOTBALL: AREA PLAYERS MAKE SMALL DENT IN COC LINEUP.

The community's football team?

For its first football game in 17 years, College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  coach Chuck Lyon has named six of 22 startersfrom Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, .

Wide receivers Brian Pritchett (Hart) and Jeremy Mushinsky (Saugus), left tackle Erien Hodge (Saugus) are the area's offensive starters. Linebackers Kevin Giberson of Saugus, Sean Cogswell of Canyon and Mike Kowalczyk of Canyon are on defense.

Lyon wasn't surprised at the small numbers.

``There weren't any seniors from this year's high schools,'' he said. ``Hart had four graduate and only one is playing football, and he's in Reno (David Neill David Neill (born July 17 1980[]) was an American college football quarterback for the University of Nevada. Lyon also received two players from Valencia, of which only one, Jason Leffler Jason Leffler (born September 16, 1975) is a NASCAR driver from Long Beach, California. Leffler moved from the open-wheel ranks to NASCAR's three major series. He currently drives the #38 Braun Racing Toyota in the NASCAR Busch Series. , remains (Michael Swanson left the team).

``There wasn't a huge senior class,'' Lyon said, adding others, including Saugus graduate quarterbacks Chris Kobe and Kevin Carrasco of Saugus, will play.

Canyon coach Larry Mohr said it's not Lyon's fault. He graduated several players and gave Lyon each phone number. He also knows Lyon called those players numerous times.
