COC FINISHES SEASON WITH A THUD : CHAFFEY 30, CANYONS 14.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

What was supposed to be a dream ending to the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  football team's remarkable two-year run since its rebirth quickly became a nightmare.

Twenty sophomores who helped coach Chuck Lyon re-establish the program last year set out to bring COC See chip on chip.  its first bowl-game victory to close out their junior college careers. But six turnovers foiled the plan and Chaffey defeated visiting COC 30-14 in Saturday's Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Bowl.

The Panthers (8-3) utilized a relentless pass rush to combat COC's vaunted vaunt

aerial attack. And it was all quarterback Chris Kobe could do to get away from Chaffey's defenders.

``I definitely didn't want this to be the way I played my last game,'' said Kobe, who completed 17 of 39 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown. He did throw three interceptions and lost two of COC's three fumbles.

``I wanted to go out with a good feeling,'' Kobe added. ``This isn't it.''

Suffering from a fresh case of the flu, Kobe said he was winded throughout the game. But he wasn't the only Cougars player ailing after their second consecutive bowl loss - COC lost to Mt. San Jacinto San Jacinto, river, c.130 mi (210 km) long, rising in SE Texas as the West Fork and flowing S to Galveston Bay. A list of COC's walking wounded Walking wounded is a term used in first aid and triage to indicate injured persons who are of a relatively low priority. These patients are conscious and breathing and usually have only (relatively) minor injuries; thus they are capable of walking. :

, a contributing factor to the line's porous play in the game.

All-Western State Conference defensive end Joe Dunster suffered a torn lateral meniscus The lateral meniscus (external semilunar fibrocartilage) is nearly circular and covers a larger portion of the articular surface than the medial meniscus.

in his right knee and had to be carried off the field early in the second quarter.

All-conference honorable-mention receiver Jason Kitchens suffered a third-degree shoulder separation just before halftime after he had caught a 35-yard pass to set up Kobe's 1-yard touchdown run, which pulled COC to within 10-7.

All-conference honorable-mention offensive lineman Jon Bondarczuk has played through pain all year with bone spurs on each of his ankles, and this seemed to finally be too much of a strain for him.

All-conference first-team linebacker Sean Cogswell suffered a sprained ankle in the third quarter.

Does this sound at all familiar to the way Canyons ended last year?

``Quite a bit,'' said Lyon, who has guided the Cougars to a 14-8 record since reviving the program. ``I've got to figure out how to get it right.''

The first thing Lyon should address is the turnovers, which led to 16 Chaffey points. The offensive line, which continually allowed Kobe to be flushed from the pocket and forced him to throw with defenders bearing down on him, played a major role in the inconsistency.

``When things started going bad I thought, `Oh God, here it comes Here It Comes is the third EP from Doves. It was the last release on the band's Casino Records label on August 2, 1999 on limited CD and 10" vinyl. Martin Rebelski, the unofficial fourth member of Doves, plays piano on the title track.  again,' '' Youngs said. ``It was weird. Nothing really worked for us today.''

Chaffey's defensive pressure had something to do with COC's ineffective offense, which gained only 268 yards. Running back Steve Smith had a team-high 61 yards on seven carries and Kobe added 43 yards on 11 rushes. Team-leading running back Major Caldwell was held to minus-4 yards on seven carries.
