COC BEAT: WILL 1999 BE THE YEAR COC GETS THROUGH REGIONALS?

Byline: Scott Magoloff Daily News Staff Writer

College of the Canyons' softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team is in the midst Adv. 1. in the midst - the middle or central part or point; "in the midst of the forest"; "could he walk out in the midst of his piece?"

The Cougars (27-11-1, 13-3) have already set a school record for wins with four games remaining in the regular season. The 1994 edition had 23 wins and finished in second place in the Western State Conference.

The most disappointing thing about the '94 team was that it was eliminated in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regionals, keeping COC's softball program from the state-championship tournament again. No Cougars team has ever advanced that far.

``We've been unfortunate for one reason or another to be eliminated in the years we've gone to the regionals,'' said coach Ray Whitten, who is in his 12th year at COC See chip on chip. . ``Naturally, it'd be a disappointment if we weren't able to do it (this year). If it did turn out that way, the only good aspect is that all of my players but three are returning.''

In addition to the prospect of reaching the state championships, another exciting possibility is that COC could end up as one of the top four seeded teams in the Southern California Regionals, meaning it would host its bracket In programming, brackets (the [ and ] characters) are used to enclose numbers and subscripts. For example, in the C statement int menustart [4] = ; the [4] indicates the number of elements in the array, and the contents are enclosed in curly braces.  in the double-elimination tournament A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. .

Whitten says his Cougars have an ``outside chance'' at the No. 4 seeding if they win their last four games. They sit at No. 9 in the rankings, but Whitten believes a mistake was made because the record that was listed was incorrect. They were also ranked No. 9 the week before, meaning they likely should have moved up.

As hot as COC is - it has won 11 consecutive Western State Conference games - running off its last four games would be an accomplishment in itself.

The key two-game stretch will be a doubleheader at Bakersfield, which was 9-6 and in second place to COC in the WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

standings as of Tuesday's games. The first game starts at noon on Saturday.

``They'll draw a pretty good-sized crowd - pro-Bakersfield, anti-Canyon - and they have to win every game they can,'' Whitten said.

Making it a more difficult task is the fact that Canyons has already beaten Bakersfield twice this season. Sweeping any team, in any sport, four times in one season is always considered an achievement.

Hoping to contribute to such a feat is freshman Chantal Pershing, who leads the Cougars in hitting. She is batting .528 and also has two home runs and a team-high 19 RBI RBI

. She added to her totals with two RBI in Tuesday's 17-1 win over Glendale.

Center fielder Jennifer Rennie was 4 for 4 with four RBI against Glendale. She only had three RBI coming into the game. Also, first baseman Andrea Wintermute went 2 for 4 with four RBI on Tuesday, bringing her season total to 16 RBI.

Kung-Fu fighting: Designated player Danielle Fiddler, who is one of COC's leading hitters, batting .438 with nine RBI and five doubles, missed the Glendale game with a cracked toe.

She suffered the injury while ``pretending at home that she was a female Bruce Lee Noun 1. Bruce Lee - United States actor who was an expert in kung fu and starred in martial arts films (1941-1973)

,'' Whitten said. ``I ordered her to never do it again and she promised she never will.''

Fiddler's target on the roundhouse kick was a friend on the Canyon High softball team.

Whitten hopes to have Fiddler back for that all-important doubleheader on Saturday.
