COC BEAT: SHE PULLS NEW PROGRAM TOGETHER : AFTER UNUSUAL RECRUITING, STANICH BUILDS WATER POLO TEAM AT COC.Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer First-time water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. This summer she could be found asking people in shopping centers shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into and supermarkets if they were interested in playing. Now, despite only two players on the team having any experience, Stanich has a full program up and running. ``Our goal was just to improve and we're doing better than expected,'' Stanich said. ``Everyone on the team is a freshman, including myself.'' Stanich, COC's swimming/diving coach, is as new to the sport as the majority of her players. The program has benefited from playing against more established teams such as Ventura and Mt. Stanich also takes her players to certain tournaments not to play, but to watch how other teams play. ``We're really trying to learn the game and we're getting more experience each game,'' she said. ``Some of the real powerhouses are helping us in the water. They're still tough on us - after they score heavily, they help the young ladies. There's a nice camaraderie ca·ma·ra·der·ie n. Stanich has had such an enjoyable time coaching that she tried out as the team's goalie. She was planning to enroll in 12 units (the necessary amount to be eligible for a sport) and suit up as a coach/goalie. A torn back muscle ended Stanich's goalie experiment and left her with a healthy respect for water polo. ``I guess I'm too old,'' she joked. ``I appreciate it much more. It's a hard sport.'' The Cougars have placed well in their past two tournaments for a first-year program, finishing sixth out of nine in the Ventura tournament and eighth out of 16 in the Mt. SAC tournament. Christine Halty, also an Alemany graduate, has four goals. The two bring the only legitimate experience to the COC program. Water polo coming: With the addition of the sport to COC's athletic department, Stanich is in desperate need of a development program. Most junior colleges with a team are in a recruiting district in which high schools also field water polo teams. COC is not, making recruiting almost impossible. ``We've had one home game and we lost to Ventura,'' Stanich said. ``We had a great crowd. They seemed to enjoy the game. We just wish the local high schools would pick it up.'' Rest needed: The long week the women's soccer team has (it had a bye Tuesday) will be well-received by the team and especially coach Phil Marcellin. The Cougars (10-2-1, 3-2-1) haven't been scoring goals at the rate that had resulted in their No. 6 ranking in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, last week. The minor slide - COC is 2-2-1 after starting the year 8-0 - has coincided with the birth of Marcellin's first child, Sophia, who was born Sept. 12. The two could have a cause-and-effect relationship. ``We've been in a funk Funk , Casimir 1884-1967.
