``It's overwhelming,'' said coach Lisa Mosier, who has guided the Cougars to a 14-4, 8-0 record in her third season as head coach. ``The game plan has always been to peak at the end of the season so you can take that play into the playoffs. Never before has that formula worked so well.

The season has to be especially satisfying for Mosier, regardless of the team's play in the postseason. She gave up a teaching job she loved at Pepperdine, her alma mater, to focus on the COC volleyball team. For the past two years, she had been traveling between the two schools almost daily.

Earlier this season, she spoke about her uncertainty over whether it would pay to focus on volleyball.

She received positive proof at the Santa Monica game when her team drew the largest crowd of the season at COC. Mosier said about 200 fans came out to witness the Cougars clinching a title they hadn't held in at least 19 years.

``All along, people have been very complimentary,'' Mosier said. ``Most of those people were either parents or friends of the players. In the last couple of games, people with no relationship to the college are coming out, having read about us in the newspaper and are watching us play.

Coach Lee Smelser said his players suffered from the first-game ``jitters'' in the first half, which they ended trailing 63-35.

``We were a step slow in the first 20 minutes, but we outscored them by 13 in the second half,'' Smelser said. ``We showed signs of life in the second half.''

Freshman forward Nana Gbewonyo, from Kennedy High, led COC with 23 points in his college debut.
