``Obviously, it's not going well,'' Mohney said. ``It's not good in all aspects. To say it's not a real happy camp right now is an understatement.''

Pitching, thought to be a strength, has been steady but not dominant. Mohney said there have been a few ``breakdowns'' from his staff. But he is less worried about that than what he has seen - or, has not seen - on offense.

``The main thing is run production,'' he said. ``It's one of those things you don't like to talk about, like fumbling. You just hope it gets back.''

Mohney will know soon enough, as COC played at Ventura Tuesday and will host Moorpark today in a rescheduled game from a Feb. 9 rainout rain·out

After back-to-back games yesterday and today, Canyons has Thursday off before welcoming Merced for games Friday and Saturday. After that, Western State Conference play begins Feb. 23, as COC plays host to Hancock.

Playoff bound: After a fifth-place finish in the Western State Conference Southern Division, the COC men's basketball team is headed to the regional playoffs.

COC (18-14, 4-6), matching its highest win total since the 1992-93 season, earned the No. 19 seed in the 32-team Southern Regional and will play its first-round game at Cuesta cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. The steep side exposes the edge of erosion-resistant rock layers that form the cuestas.  on Friday.

``This year was an exceptional year,'' COC coach Lee Smelser said of the WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

His Cougars, despite their fifth-place finish, were originally given the No. 18 seed, but had to drop one spot to face a non-WSC Southern Division team in the first round.

Smelser has the Cougars' season-ending 73-63 win over West L.A. to thank for his playoff status. A loss might have kept them out, but guards Charles Madison (22 points), Eurskine Robinson (15) and forward Anthony Ellison (10) ensured there would be no questions after guiding the Cougars to victory.

``I expected to be in,'' Smelser said. ``After we ended up 4-6 it was just a matter of where and who.''

Canyons defeated Cuesta (22-12, 6-2) 103-95 in a Jan. 16 game at COC in the teams' only meeting this year.

It will play Tuesday against the winner of Friday's Mt. SAC-Santa Ana game.
