, McNeal returned to action and pitched through the pain, holding down host Glendale College Thursday in a 9-1 win that propelled the Cougars into a first-place tie with Glendale and Bakersfield in the Western State Conference.

Glendale (24-11, 13-6) had beaten Canyons (25-11, 13-6) twice earlier this season.

``My back was hurting, but this was very important,'' McNeal said. ``We wanted to win this game very badly.''

Canyons jumped on Glendale starter Jared Sandler, posting a 5-0 third-inning lead to give Sandler (9-1) his first loss.

Canyons coach Len Mohney hopes his squad is peaking at the right time.

``These guys know what they have to do,'' he said. ``With Bakersfield, us and Glendale, there are three really tough teams in this division, and only two are gonna make the playoffs, so nothing is going to be handed to us.''

Glendale did not play well, committing six errors and failing to take advantage of several scoring opportunities. Center fielder Gary Havens made two sixth-inning miscues that led to three runs.

The Vaqueros scored their only run on consecutive doubles by Freddy Sanchez Frederick Phillip (Freddy) Sanchez, Jr. (born December 21, 1977 in Hollywood, California) is an infielder in Major League Baseball. Canyons has seven games remaining and will meet Glendale again at home on April 29.

``The way things are working out, there is going to be a team that is going to have a 25-30 win season, but they're not going to be in the playoffs,'' Mohney said. ``It's gonna be a dogfight.''
