With CEC's assistance, Uniroyal plant managers received corporate approval to install a new-technology, very-efficient, tangentially-fired gas boiler boiler, device for generating steam. It consists of two principal parts: the furnace, which provides heat, usually by burning a fuel, and the boiler proper, a device in which the heat changes water into steam. that emits substantially reduced levels of nitrous oxide nitrous oxide or nitrogen (I) oxide, chemical compound, N2O, a colorless gas with a sweetish taste and odor. Puskar said the Uniroyal conversion, soon to be in operation, is expected to pay for itself in less than four years from energy- and coal-related operating cost expenses.
