TUCSON, Ariz. - The news that USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  officially hired Tim Floyd Tim Floyd (born February 25, 1954) is the current head coach of the University of Southern California men's college basketball team. Floyd is also a former head coach of several teams in both the NCAA and the NBA.  as its basketball coach did little to buoy the spirits of the Trojans playing a few hundred miles away on Thursday night.

``Tim Floyd? I don't really know him,'' USC guard Nick Young said. ``I've heard good things and bad things.''

was even less enthused over the announcement, which is understandable considering the drama surrounding the coaching search the past month.

``I'm not worried about what coach comes here because I've seen some crazy stuff,'' Stewart said. ``We'll see if we have a coach. (Rick) Majerus was supposed to be the coach and he left.''

with an 0-5 record but the Trojans avoided a blowout and were within four points (64-60) with less than six minutes remaining.

``I thought it was going to be a big upset,'' Young said.

It was just the fourth time in the past 20 years that USC didn't lose to the Wildcats by double digits Double Digits was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right. Unlike most losses at McKale, however, USC didn't let the crowd take over the game.

teams I coached for,'' USC interim coach Jim Saia said. ``They didn't blow us out but we just couldn't get a stop when we needed it.''

A big reason for the Trojans' success was Young (Cleveland High of Reseda), who scored 18 points and made nine of 15 shots.

``I was in a zone,'' Young said. ``I got used to the crowd at Oregon and Oregon State, so they didn't bother me tonight.

``We sat down and had a team meeting (Monday) and decided we had nothing to lose tonight.''

It was big bounce back from last Saturday's embarrassing 17-point loss to Washington State at the Sports Arena, although the Trojans are still off to the worst conference start since 1989.

``We had a chance to win the game,'' Saia said. ``If we play this well, we'll win more than we lose. They tried to blow us out and we came right back at them.''

Freshman point guard Gabe Pruitt added 12 points and forward Jeff McMillan scored 11. The key stat though was turnovers, as Pruitt and point guard Derrick Craven committed 11, just one less than the entire Arizona team.

USC also couldn't contain Arizona guards Chris Rodgers (22 points) and Salim Stoudamire (21 points), who combined to make eight 3-point shots.

``(Athletic director) Mike Garrett just told me to coach the team,'' Saia said. ``I'm happy there's closure to it. I know Tim Floyd. Our UCLA team beat him in the Sweet 16 (in 1997) when he was at Iowa State. He's a great coach and tactician.''
