COACHES STRESS EXPERIENCE, NOT WINNING; CANYON COUNTRY LITTLE LEAGUE SET TO START SEASON.

Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

Sheldon Wigdor remembers when he played Little League baseball. He remembers the camaraderie ca·ma·ra·der·ie

He even remembers getting a couple of good hits, like his first home run. What he doesn't remember are the win-loss records.

As a major division (for ages 11 and 12) manager in the Canyon Country Little League this year, Wigdor said he'd like his players to cherish the same kind of memories.

``Our objective is not to make professional players, our objective is to have kids learn how to win well, lose well and work as a team,'' Wigdor said. ``When they learn about the sport, they learn about life.''

Wigdor, like five other major coaches in the Canyon Country Little League's east and west divisions, is now preparing for the 1998 season, scheduled to kick off on March 7. With luck, the day will welcome sunny skies instead of showers, which have forced teams to cancel a few practices in recent weeks. League president Steve White said his board expects about three to four rainouts during the season, and Saturday games may be rescheduled for the following Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. .

``The rain right now has made it difficult to do anything,'' Mariners coach Jason Conn said. ``All the practice fields have been sloshy and muddy, and they're still going to be muddy for weeks. It'll be hard to pick up ground balls.

``But everybody's going to have that disadvantage. I told my kids that whoever practices most (on their own) is the team that will start off best.''

This year's group is composed of six teams, with the Angels, Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

and Mariners in the west division and the Braves, Cardinals and Dodgers competing in the east. Last season the Angels and the Cardinals met in the final game of the District 40 Tournament of Champions, defeating teams from Woodland Hills and Reseda along the way. It was the first time two squads from Canyon Country competed for the tourney's championship, and the Angels took home the title with a 3-1 victory.

``It was quite a feat for our league,'' said Greg Britton, assistant coach for the Angels. ``I think we got a crop of guys who were really talented. Now we're still good, still competitive. Most of the kids now play in year-round baseball and have played in five tournaments (by the time they start Little League).''

White said the level of competition in the league may have risen due to a change made three years ago, when three-year age brackets brackets: see punctuation.  were decreased to two years, and the division was split into major and triple-A. Each major team is allowed to field 12 players and is scheduled to play 20 games this season.

Now a look at the teams and coaches' perspectives:

Angels: Having four returners from last year's TOC-winning squad will help strengthen this year's team, Britton said. Rex Ives, an All-American from Cal State Fullerton, will serve his second year as manager.

Braves: Wigdor anticipates problems with the weather. ``Last year we didn't lose one game to rain. This year we expect to miss most of March, so pitching and hitting is not going to be nearly as sharp in the beginning,'' he said.

Cardinals: Manager Steve Robinson This article is about the Welsh former professional boxer. For the NASA astronaut, see Stephen Robinson.

pitchers in Alex Rome and Jessie Mulloy, and a third pitcher in Kevin Felan, who missed the last half of the season last year due to a broken arm.

Dodgers: Chemistry is a key ingredient in manager Curt Reynold's team this year. Reynolds said many of his players have worked together previously on other teams and already mix together well.

Indians: Manager Rick Gschwender is excited about versatile players and Bryce Warr, a transfer from the Palmdale Pony League The Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League, also known as the PONY League, was a Class D minor league baseball circuit that played from 1939 through 1956. The forerunner of the modern Class A New York - Penn League, the PONY served as the first professional baseball address of , where he was an All-Star player.

Mariners: Conn, who has been coaching Little League for six years, said he particularly enjoys working with 11- and 12-year-olds since ``everybody's just a little bit more solid at their position,'' he said. ``They also watch baseball more and see what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye.
