COACHES BRING A NEW MEANING TO ROLE PLAYING.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

The Valencia High girls' basketball team has created its share of excitement on the court with its fast-break offense this season. Head coach Greg Hayes and assistant Scott Bernard Scott Bernard (Known as Stick Bernard in Genesis Climber Mospeada) is a fictional character from the third Robotech Series: The New Generation. He is a young man, who is somewhat reluctant but a leader at best. , however, have given new meaning to the term ``Showtime'' on the Vikings' bench.

Hayes and Bernard first crossed paths as actors in a play at the Canyon Theatre Guild Theatre Guild

in 1988. They discovered their common passion for acting and basketball.

The thespians have been coaching together ever since. First with the Canyon High boys, then for the last two seasons with the Valencia girls. Over the years, Hayes and Bernard have developed coaching characters of their own.

On occasion, they have switched roles, particularly after Hayes has received a technical for arguing an official's call. Hayes has sat back and assumed the nice-guy role to avoid ejection and allowed Bernard to take the lead. Once, Hayes even left the floor completely.

``Some of your best coaches are the best actors,'' Bernard said. ``They both have to communicate. Greg is putting on a front trying to get attention. That's partly why he is a good coach.

He coached at Canyon for 14 seasons, posting a 180-160 record and guiding the Cowboys to 10 postseason appearances and two league titles before taking over at Valencia in the 1996-97 season.

``As a teacher, you're in front of an audience,'' Hayes said. ``I thought if I learned to act, I would become a better teacher by keeping their attention. I never ever thought I would act, but I fell in love with it.''

Hayes soon began landing roles for plays at the Canyon Theatre Guild. In 1988, he was selected to be a contestant on the television show ``The Dating Game.'' Hayes wasn't the lucky bachelor, but he did meet his future wife Jan while acting with the Canyon Theatre Guild.

His father, Alan Bernard, has won five Emmys and an Oscar for sound for his work on ``Star Trek'' and ``Gunsmoke.''

Bernard began acting and directing with the Canyon Theatre Guild after moving to Valencia in 1988. Bernard met Hayes while working on a production of ``Arsenic and Old Lace.'' He even directed Hayes as the lead actor in the play ``Footlight Frenzy.'' The show received good reviews and was extended for two weeks to accommodate sellout audiences.

``It was like I was playing for Scott,'' Hayes said. ``I was the player and Scott was the coach. He was a great director and great actor. I was impressed with his insight to motivate individuals. He loved basketball and that's all that he would talk about at the theatre.''

Bernard started attending Canyon games and evaluating the Cowboys' strengths and weaknesses for Hayes. Eventually, he started scouting upcoming Canyon opponents. In 1994-95, Hayes brought Bernard aboard at Canyon as the junior varsity coach and varsity assistant.

When Hayes was offered the Valencia coaching job, he accepted the job only if Bernard would remain his assistant.

``He is the perfect assistant and so supportive,'' Hayes said. ``He is a team guy all the way. Our philosophies are so similar. We both like to press and fast break.''

The two make a pretty good team. Hayes and Bernard directed Valencia to a 13-12 record and its first winning season in school history last year. The Vikings came within a game of their first postseason berth before suffering a one-point overtime defeat in the Foothill League finale.

This season, Valencia is off to its best start ever at 11-4. The Vikings finished third in the season-opening Paraclete tournament and avenged last year's setback to Canyon with a 49-32 victory in their Foothill League opener Friday night.

``Greg is a great coach and I wouldn't spend the time if it weren't for him,'' Bernard said. ``I had my thrills acting, but I love coaching and working with the kids, helping them mature and hopefully guide them into being good people.''
