COACH CHOSEN TO RUN SOCCER PROGRAM; BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE STANDOUT SLATED FOR REINS OF WOMEN'S SQUAD.

Philip Marcellin, a one-time winner of coach of the year honors in Bakersfield, has been tapped to build College of the Canyons' new women's soccer program, scheduled to debut in the fall.

Marcellin has coached women's soccer at Bakersfield College BC was founded in 1913 and initially housed on the campus of Bakersfield High School (then Kern County Union High School) before moving in 1956 to its current location "on the hill" in northeast Bakersfield.  for the past five seasons and won Western State Conference coach of the year in 1994. He walks into a program with no equipment, no players and a $14,000 budget.

``I'm very excited,'' Marcellin said from his Bakersfield home. ``It's very challenging but I'm ready I'm Ready is the double platinum second release from R&B singer Tevin Campbell. I'm Ready yielded the biggest R&B hit of his career the #1 R&B smash "Can We Talk", and produce 3 more successful hits in "I'm Ready", "Always In My Heart" and "Don't Say Goodbye Girl".  to get in there and get it all done.''

When he walked into a meeting Monday to sign his contract, he saw administrators wearing ``Women's soccer Fall of '98'' buttons and immediately knew he was among supporters.

``I don't think in all my years have I gone into meetings and seen that,'' he said. ``I can't help but want to work for that.''

Marcellin's appointment is expected to be made official Jan. 21 when the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. His immediate goal, after securing equipment and players, is to run a program that will prepare the players for the final two years of college, both academically and athletically.

``It's got to go hand in hand,'' he said.

Marcellin amassed a record of 58-29-18 at Bakersfield and guided the 1994 team to the school's first Western State Conference title, earning him coach of the year honors.

Marcellin's teams won all-academic awards in the 1993-94 and 1995-96 seasons.

``One handicap I have is not being as up on the community talent, but I will get involved,'' he said. ``I have an advantage: They're competing now.''

Marcellin said he hoped to have a pool of players identified by the middle of February.
