CO-FOUNDER OF LONGS DRUG STORES PASSES AWAY

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Longs Drug Stores (NYSE: LDG) today announced the death of Thomas J. Long, co-founder of the company.
His nephew, Robert M. Long, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Longs Drug Stores, stated that the passing of his uncle, who was 82, was not only a great loss to his family and many friends, but to the company he helped found.
Tom Long was a benefactor to many, both personally and through the Thomas J. Long Foundation. His civic and philanthropic involvement was considerable, and he will be missed by many.
While Tom had retired from the company in 1975, his contributions to the firm continued through his active directorship. Robert Long stated that no changes in the operations or objectives of the company would result from his uncle's death.
Thomas J. Long and his brother, Joseph M. Long, founded the company in Oakland, Calif., in 1938. From this one store the company has grown to 274 stores in five states with over 15,000 employees, and reported gross sales in excess of $2 billion during its most recent fiscal year.
