CNet Unveils Ethernet-to-ATM Hub.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 27, 1995--CNet Technology introduced a powerful new Ethernet-to-ATM Hub that not only meets the industry's advanced communications requirements but also supports today's legacy network users. The new CN9100 LAN-to-WAN hub connects to an ATM switch through the 100Mpbs fiber-optic interface and supplies a dedicated 10Mpbs per port. Using cut-through technology, Ethernet traffic will be filtered and forwarded at the rate of 14,880 packets per second. Local port-to-port switching is also performed at wire speed.

Developed in conjunction with Taiwan's Telecommunications Laboratories, the first customer for the CN9100 hub will be Taiwan's phone service provider, the Directorate General of Telecommunications. "Taiwan is aggressively moving forward to develop a national information infrastructure that will have a strong ATM backbone," said Henry H. Wong, CNet's executive vice president. "We developed a hub that they can use now and then, as higher bandwidth capabilities are more widely installed they can take advantage of the expanded performance capabilities without having to invest in new or additional hardware. Because ATM technology is still undergoing a maturation process in the U.S., as well, we feel that it's important to provide built-in scalability," he explained.

ports and a 100Mpbs TAXI interface. Another four AUI ports can be added through the use of CNet's CN9100EMS slave module.

In addition to supporting Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) and User Network Interface (UNI) 3.0, the CNet Ethernet-to-ATM hub also supports RFC (Request For Comments) A document that describes the specifications for a recommended technology. Although the word "request" is in the title, if the specification is ratified, it becomes a standards document.  1483, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. With a suggested retail price of $9,999, the new CNet CN9100 LAN-to-WAN switching hub is 17.4" W x 5.1" H x 10.6" D. The unit is provided with a universal internal power supply as well as diagnostic, traffic and power indicator LEDs.
