award last week to five employees at its sixth annual Raymond F. O'Brien Award of Excellence Dinner. Winners, who were nominated by their peers, were flown to Palo Alto for the special recognition ceremony hosted by CNF President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory L. Quesnel. O'Brien, CNF chairman-emeritus and namesake of the award, participated in the event, as did Donald E. Moffitt, CNF's current chairman and founder of the award.

The Raymond F. O'Brien Award of Excellence is bestowed annually upon employees who demonstrate the same professional and personal leadership qualities as O'Brien, who served as CNF's chairman for 17 years. CNF (NYSE NYSE

Each honoree received $5,000 worth of CNF stock and a specially designed crystal sculpture.

The recipients of this year's Raymond F. O'Brien Award of Excellence were:
-- Hector Ahorrio, logistics manager, Menlo Logistics, Sandston, VA.

-- Mary K. Hallgren, senior account executive, Con-Way Central Express, Quad
Cities, IL.

-- Gerald D. Jeffs, senior logistics engineer, Menlo Logistics, Redwood City,
CA.

-- Mark Lombardo, general manager, Emery Worldwide, San Diego, CA.

-- Robert G. Simons, senior capacity performance and facilities administrator,
CNF, Portland, OR.

These employees were initially nominated for the award by their peers. A peer-selection committee then submitted names to a final selection committee, composed of former recipients and distinguished retirees. The award recipients were selected because they exemplify many of O'Brien's leadership traits, such as service excellence, innovative solutions, cost controls, developing others and ethics/integrity.

"We have so many talented employees at CNF," said Quesnel. "This award is designed to recognize the best of the best each year.

"These employees were nominated because their special contributions to our organization stand out to their peers. When our chairman, Don Moffitt, founded this program, it was based on the belief that the highest honor employees can receive is the respect of their coworkers. After meeting this year's recipients, I can see why the people who work with them each day value these employees so highly."

Following are brief descriptions of some of the many accomplishments for which these honorees were recognized:

-- Hector Ahorrio - Ahorrio was honored for his important role in

planning and executing the successful move of a warehouse in

Virginia that Menlo Logistics operates for Hewlett-Packard,

one of its largest accounts. The move involved transporting

840 truckloads of material in 10 working days while continuing

to ship from both the old and new facilities. Hector was also

recognized for his ability to lead and motivate by the example

that he sets, and for the outstanding results he has achieved

in the areas of customer service, warehouse operations,

process documentation and production standards.

warehouse management systems for its clients, and for
