After meeting this year's winners, it is clear to me why their coworkers value them so highly." Following are brief descriptions of some of the many accomplishments for which these honorees were recognized:
-- Edwina A. Bock -- For more than 15 years, Bock has worked in
the over, short and damaged operations of the claims
management department at Con-Way Central Express, one of the
regional carriers of Con-Way Transportation Services. Despite
the pressures of being the ultimate problem solver for
shipments that go astray within the system, her personality
was described as "overflowing and tremendously optimistic,
with a contagious, can-do attitude." Her diligence has allowed
her co-workers to perform their jobs more effectively and
efficiently. Through her efforts, Bock has saved the company
thousands of dollars over the years, including more than
$350,000 in 1999 alone. Always there for her customers, Bock
has not missed a day of work in the past three years.
-- D. Wayne Byerley, Jr. -- For the past ten years, Byerley has
managed the multi-million dollar centralized purchasing
operation for the CNF companies (Con-Way Transportation
Services, Emery Worldwide and Menlo Logistics) that includes
everything from tractors and forklifts to real estate and jet
fuel. Byerley also oversees the operations of Road Systems,
CNF's trailer manufacturing company. Described as "the
ultimate professional," Byerley was nominated for his flexible
and innovative approach to his job. For example, he invented a
lightweight loading deck that can be easily placed inside a
trailer to enable stacking of previously unstackable freight.
This invention, now manufactured by Road Systems, has saved
Con-Way millions of dollars over the years by enabling it to
fit more freight in each trailer.
-- William A. Dolezal -- In his role as director of Christmas
planning and operations for Emery Worldwide Airlines (EWA),
Dolezal helps design and oversee the huge and complex
Christmas operations of the Priority Mail network that EWA
operates under contract with the U.S. Postal Service. EWA's
network of ten Priority Mail processing centers transports and
sorts 15 percent of the Priority Mail delivered in the U.S. In
December of 1999, it handled more than 63 million packages.
Dolezal also served on the startup team from EWA that designed
and built the EWA postal operations network. Dolezal was cited
as having earned an extraordinary level of trust from the
USPS. He started with EWA in 1985 and has become well known
within the company for assisting with projects outside his
work area and routinely volunteering for assignments and
sticking with them until completion.
-- Stuart Frost -- Frost is Emery Worldwide's gateway manager in
the U.K., a job that was described as "having to please all of
the people...all of the time." Because Emery operates as a
freight forwarder outside the U.S., Frost's responsibilities
include negotiating cargo space with major airlines in order
to meet Emery's commitments to its customers. It's a difficult
job, as commercial cargo space is increasingly hard to find.
Frost was described as well-respected by the major airlines,
who consider him an honest, knowledgeable, hard-bargainer who
believes wholeheartedly in providing the best value for all.
Frost was described as an extremely conscientious, dependable
and hard working professional who sees every challenge through
to the end. Frost, who is known by his customers as "Mr.
Emery," joined the company in 1967 and his enthusiasm for the
company, his fellow employees and Emery's customers has never
dimmed.
-- Rochelle (Shelley) E. Levitt -- Levitt is the office manager
for Menlo Logistics and administrative assistant to the
company's CEO, John Williford. She was described on her
nomination form as "the glue that holds Menlo Logistics
together." Levitt joined the company 12 years ago, and was the
second employee of Menlo, after Williford. She was cited for
having added value for both Menlo and its customers in every
capacity she has worked in over the years. In the tradition of
Ray O'Brien, Levitt works hard to develop others and serves as
a role model and mentor for all of the administrative
assistants at Menlo and throughout CNF. With her constant
display of professionalism, patience and compassion, she has
set a fine example for everyone at Menlo where her willingness
to do whatever it takes...with a smile...is contagious among
her fellow employees.
