:CNF), a $6-billion management company of global supply chain services, has completed construction of its five-story, 252,000 square foot technology center and will begin moving employees in this month.

Built on the existing administrative and technology (AdTech) campus at 2055 N.W. Savier Street in Northwest Portland, the new building will consolidate approximately 850 information technology personnel currently located at various buildings throughout the area into one, energy efficient facility in Northwest Portland. The AdTech campus serves as the administrative, technical and financial headquarters for CNF's global operations Global Operations is a first-person shooter computer game developed by Barking Dog Studios and published by both Crave Entertainment and Electronic Arts.  and Menlo Logistics.

"CNF, which was founded in Portland as a regional trucking company 72 years ago, has evolved into a global supply chain management powerhouse and a technology leader in our industry," said Roy Swackhamer, vice president and chief information officer at CNF. "By combining the technology resources of all of our subsidiary companies into one location, we are in a better position to leverage those resources and further our vision that our ability to be leaders in the movement of information is just as important to our future as the movement of freight."

Energy Efficiencies Planned from the Start

CNF's new building demonstrates how environmental and fiscal responsibilities can go hand in hand. By designing and constructing a facility that uses energy and natural resources wisely, the new building is expected to save $65,000 per year in energy costs.

Before the company even broke ground in 1999, CNF consulted and used Portland General Electric's (PGE PGE Pacific Gas and Electric Company

) Earth Advantage(TM) standards for commercial construction. Building designers worked with PGE environmental and energy consultants to create a building that is expected to use 29 percent less energy each year in the office portion of the building than one built to Oregon Energy Code.

"Cost savings were not the only factor we considered when choosing to build an energy efficient facility," said Chuck Dragon, vice president of administration at CNF. "The company's roots are here. We felt it was important to give back to the community and our employees by doing our part to conserve resources."

Among the many energy efficient designs used, CNF's facility is one of the first buildings in Oregon to use a raised floor distribution system, which eliminates the need for traditional ductwork duct·work

and offers considerable flexibility when reconfiguring office space or running additional wiring or network cable.

The lighting system is expected to use only 0.8 watts per square foot, about one-third less than the baseline lighting system of a typical office building. It will gradually dim or brighten according to according to

to maximize daylight, and walls are limited to the interior to allow light to penetrate deeper into the building.

The building's construction also took into account the environment by utilizing recycled materials in its construction. Countertops contain recycled concrete and rubber flooring is made from recycled tires. Water-conserving plumbing fixtures were also selected and CNF even installed an on-site storm water retention system with a special filter, known as a downstream defender, to remove sediment and particulates from storm runoff before it enters the city's storm water system.

Among the building's most important environmental features are those that enhance the quality of the indoor environment. The mechanical ventilation mechanical ventilation
