CNF Brings Low Cost Desktop Computing to Mobile Users.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1996--CNF announces the Digitari(TM) family of low-cost Universal Docking Stations for mobile computers.

Digitari is based on a new multi-channel/multiplexing, PCMCIA/CardBus, technology called PortPlex(TM). PortPlex allows Digitari docking stations to plug directly into the PC Card slot A socket for inserting a printed circuit board or a PC Card (CardBus card). See PC Card. , or CardBus slot, on notebook computers. The high speed PortPlex technology also lets CNF CNF Configuration (File Name Extension)

channel all of the normal docking station interfaces (serial, parallel, PS/2, audio, peripherals, ISA/PCI cards) over a single PC Card cable connecting Digitari to the notebook computer. This facilitates much lower product costs and greater expansion capabilities. The combination of these characteristics makes Digitari the first low-cost, high speed, docking station that is compatible with all notebook computers.

A New Era in Mobile Computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing. Fixed wireless applications use satellites, radio systems and lasers to transmit between permanent objects such as buildings

Paul Charles, CNF president: "Digitari opens up a new era in mobile computing. For years, most docking stations have been expensive, one-brand solutions with very few options. Full function docks have typically cost at least US$1,000. The typical docking station, introduced by major notebook computer vendors, only works with a limited selection of models from those vendors, and does not work with any other notebook brand. Worse yet, many of these vendor docking stations have become obsolete in a year or two as the notebook manufacturer introduced new portable models."

Andrew Seybold, Editor-in-Chief of "Andrew Seybold's Outlook on Communications and Computing," agreed by saying that "Digitari is the right product at the right time. Corporate MIS buyers are real tired of having to change peripherals every time they change notebooks. This is what they've been looking for Looking for

For large corporations, with thousands of installed base notebooks, from different vendors, proprietary docking stations have been a very costly problem. Most corporations have always wanted to standardize on a single technology docking station platform that will work with any brand of notebook computer. They have also wanted a mobile computing solution that matches the capabilities of desktop computing alternatives. Until Digitari, these objectives were not achievable.

Digitari brings low-cost desktop computing power to all notebook computer users. It also redefines the very nature of mobile computing. It makes mobile computing a viable alternative to desktop computing. It ushers in the age of the virtual office. It gives office workers the freedom to work at home or at the office -- with a total computing solution. It frees mobile users from having to purchase both a desktop computer and a mobile computer. It allows mobile users to keep up with the latest trends in desktop computing technology. It extends the product lifecycle Product lifecycle or product life cycle is the course of a product's sales and profits over time. Availability and Pricing

The Digitari docking station is expected to ship at the end of the first quarter of 1997. It will be available directly from CNF and from most major personal computer resellers and distributors.

The first model to be introduced will be the Digitari 535i. The Digitari 535i will feature 4 ISA (1) (Instruction Set Architecture) See instruction set.

card slots, 2 half-height peripheral bays, 1 parallel port, 1 serial port, 2 PS/2 ports, 2 speakers, 1 microphone and an integrated monitor stand for an estimated list price of US$499. The Digitari 535i is expected to be compatible with every notebook computer that has a PCMCIA card slot. The peripheral bays can be used for most popular storage devices including hard disk drives, floppy disk drives, CD-ROM drives and the Iomega Zip drive The Zip drive is a medium-capacity removable disk storage system, introduced by Iomega in late 1994. Originally it had a capacity of 100 MB, but later versions increased this to first 250 MB and then 750 MB. . The ISA card slots support most popular PC cards including the SoundBlaster card, video monitor cards, networking cards, multimedia cards, SCSI SCSI

cards and dozens of other types.

The Digitari 535i list price of US$499 represents about half the cost of a comparable, albeit proprietary, docking station from most major notebook computer manufacturers.

Additional Digitari models will be introduced throughout 1997. Featured options on these new models are expected to include integrated Zip drives, integrated multimedia options, CardBus connections, a USB USB

Mobile Computing Power

According to Greg LeVeille, CNF vice president of marketing: "Digitari, along with the CNF InnerBay Zip drive and the InnerBay Dock, brings significant versatility to notebook computers. Mobile computing solutions can now replace desktop solutions. The virtual office is now viable."

CNF also manufactures InnerBay (TM) Zip drives for Compaq notebook computers. The InnerBay Zip drives fit directly into the multifunction peripheral bays of these notebooks. InnerBay Zip drives will be available worldwide for the Compaq LTE 500 notebooks at the end of the first quarter, 1997.

Extending the power of mobile computing even further are CNF's new external multifunction peripheral bays, the InnerBay (TM) Dock, for Compaq and Toshiba notebook computers. The InnerBay Dock family supports all Compaq MultiBay, and Toshiba SelectBay, peripherals. It also supports the new CNG CNG Compressed Natural Gas
