CNC plain-type grinder for shaft-type parts.

The Landis 2SE CNC Plain Grinder is available in straight or angle wheelhead models for medium to high volume production cylindrical grinding of concentric parts such as transmission parts. The unit offers flexibility to do skive grinding using a narrow wheel and traversing table, stitch grinding for plunging multiple diameters, or traverse grinding of straight diameters.

Landis has engineered the 2SE CNC plain grinder to use either a conventional aluminum oxide or CBN grinding wheel on the same machine with wheel speeds up to 150 m/sec. Making this possible is the use of hydrostatic bearing technology and robust mechanical design. Versatility of the machine will be demonstrated at IMTS where an angle-head version tooled with a CBN grinding wheel will plunge a part with a shoulder and a diameter.

Designed to the most demanding standards for productivity, agility, reliability, and maintainability, the 2SE CNC plain grinder features a self-contained design that permits the machine to be quickly put into service or even rededicated to a different location. It features "single-plug" design with integral electrical and fluid power units. All electrical and hydraulic systems are bedmounted, and the operator control station is mounted on the front guard, reducing the machine's footprint to the minimum. The machine can be moved simply using a forklift. Investment saving of up to 25% compared with the cost of dedicated plain-type grinding machines is claimed for the new unit.

Also at IMTS, the Western Atlas Inc division will demonstrate its Multi-Head Cam Lobe Grinder, which uses coated abrasive belts to simultaneously grind up to eight cam lobes in a single plunge. Landis engineers claim that this new camshaft lobe grinding process provides the most-cost effective method for processing cam lobe profiles with re-entry contours. In some cases, the multi-head grinder offers the capability for increasing production up to three times over conventional single-wheel cam lobe grinders.

Landis software and diagnostic tools are available to optimize cylindrical grinding operations on Landis machines. These include a Force Monitoring System for process optimization, and Automatic Work Speed Generating software for cam lobe grinding programs.

Double disc grinder

The Gardner GV-600 vertical double disc grinder with 600 mm (23") diameter wheel is designed with a longer part path for progressive grinding of materials such as ceramic, glass, aluminum, ferrite, steel, titanium, plastic, and sintered carbide to achieve consistent and superior flatness and parallelism. The grinder may be used in-line with high-production automated manufacturing systems or as a stand-alone machine.

The GV-600 features a standard servo carrier that can be used as a rotary or oscillating fixture for grinding one or several parts consecutively. It is suited for either superabrasive or conventional wheels for grinding 127 mm (5") diameter parts or smaller. Features include heavy-duty, anti-friction roller bearing spindle and fully supported slide construction; digital AC servo-controlled feed system accurate to 0.00025 mm (0.000010"); and PC-based control with on-line gaging, SPC, and maintenance software.
