Total other expenses were $4,736,000 for the third quarter of 1998, an increase of $208,000 or 4.6 percent from other expenses incurred in the third quarter of 1997. Expenditures in the area of technology and operational enhancements attributed to the increase in other expenses in the third quarter of 1998.

For the nine months ended September 30, 1998, net interest income was $19,687,000, an increase of $373,000 or 1.9 percent over the third quarter of 1997. The provision for loan losses for the nine months ended September 30, 1998, was $610,000, $485,000 higher than the first nine months of 1997. Other income for the nine months ended September 30, 1998 was $3,000,000, $389,000 or 14.9 percent over the first months of 1997. Contributing to the $389,000 improvement were increases in ATM convenience fees, service charges on deposit accounts, and investment and trust management fees. For the nine months ended September 30, 1998, other expenses were $14,745,000, an increase of $1,241,000 or 9.2 percent over the third quarter of 1997. The increase in other expenses in 1998 resulted from increases in consulting costs for strategic initiatives, and technology and operational enhancements.

Total assets at September 30, 1998 were $696,958,000, up $64,630,000 or 10.2 percent from the balance at September 30, 1997. Total loans at September 30, 1998 were $371,561,000, up $31,181,000 or 11.4 percent from the balance at September 30, 1997.
