CNA General Counsel Lowry to retire; Kantor will assume duties.


CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 1997--Donald M. CNA Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Dennis H. Chookaszian said Jonathan D. Kantor will become senior vice president and general counsel of the CNA Insurance Companies effective April 1, 1997. Kantor will also become general counsel of CNA Financial Corporation when Lowry retires in January 1998.

"There is no way to do justice to Don Lowry's career by summarizing it in a few short sentences," said Chookaszian. "His contributions to CNA, to the industry, and to the legal profession could fill a document larger than some of the cases he's worked on.

"To take advantage of his knowledge and insights, Don has agreed to stay on through this year to ensure a smooth transition as he hands the reins over to Jon Kantor.

"Jon has some big shoes to fill, but based on his accomplishments and contributions since joining us less than three years ago, I have every confidence he will succeed."

Lowry first joined the company in 1953 and left in 1955, rejoining the company in 1958 as a claims attorney. He was named assistant general counsel in 1971 and was appointed vice president in 1982. In 1988, he was named vice president and general counsel, and head of the Law Department.

From 1955 until he rejoined the company in 1958, Lowry was a principal in the law firm of Boden & Lowry in Milwaukee.

Lowry obtained a degree in philosophy from Marquette University and earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School The Marquette University Law School is the professional school for the study of law at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The law school began in 1892 when students seeking legal education in Milwaukee founded what was to be known as the Milwaukee Law Class. . Founded (1878) largely through the efforts of the Connecticut Bar Association, it is devoted to improving the administration of justice, seeking uniformity of law .

Kantor, 41, currently is group vice president and chief claims counsel for CNA Insurance Companies. He has held this position since joining CNA in April 1994.
