CN reaches agreement in principle with Teamsters Canada Rail Conference on new labour contract, averting national strike.

) today reached an agreement in principle on a new labour contract for the company's locomotive engineers in Canada.

As a result of the agreement, the TCRC has cancelled its plan to strike CN at midnight tonight, and it will be business as usual tomorrow for CN's freight operations and for rail commuter agencies in Toronto and Montreal that use CN locomotive engineers to operate their trains.

The wording of the proposed five-year agreement, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2004, is being worked out. Details of the contract are being withheld pending ratification by TCRC's membership.

The TCRC has roughly 1,600 active employees at CN, with 1,490 in freight service.

Negotiation of the agreement in principle was assisted by the involvement of two mediators appointed by Federal Minister of Labour and Housing Joe Fontana.
