Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Paul M. Tellier said today Canadian National Railways will appoint an independent third party to conduct a thorough audit and assessment on the cause and circumstances of the accident which killed three people August 12 near Edson, Alberta.

"What happened at Edson is unacceptable," Mr. Tellier said. "I have initiated a full internal investigation into the cause of the accident to fully understand how and why this happened. The appointment of an independent third party to examine and report on the incident is an additional investigative measure."

The independent specialist will review all events that led to the accident and report his findings to CN. The investigation will parallel an investigation of the event conducted by CN personnel. CN has not previously invited an independent specialist to conduct such an examination of an accident. He will report to Rick Boyd, Senior Vice-President, Western Canada.

The accident occurred when west bound train 117 struck a block of railcars which had rolled on to the main line.

"Safety is a serious matter, and I and my collegues at CN are dedicated to making it the safest railway," added Mr. Tellier.
