) said today it has reached a new tentative collective agreement with the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWE BMWE Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (Canada) ) four months before the current agreement expires.

The BMWE is one of the largest rail unions in Canada and represents more than 3,400 employees at CN. Its members repair and maintain the Company's track, buildings and bridges in Canada See also: List of bridges for any bridge Alberta

.

The BMWE's existing agreement expires at year-end 2000.

Details of the new three-year contract will not be released publicly until the pact is ratified. In general terms, the agreement provides for wage increases, benefit improvements and increased productivity.

Ron Bowden, eastern system federation general chairman of the BMWE in Canada and chairman of the union bargaining committee, said: "Never before has the BMWE been able to renegotiate a labour agreement with CN so far in advance of a current agreement's expiry. This reflects a new partnership with CN and greater management awareness of the BMWE's importance in maintaining the railway's infrastructure and the safety of operations. This bodes well for BMWE members at CN." These sentiments were echoed by Ron F. Liberty, system federation general chairman of the western system federation.

Paul M. Tellier, CN's president and chief executive officer, said: "CN invited all of its unions to begin early bargaining this year in a bid to improve communications between management and labour. The BMWE was the first union to accept our offer. Like the BMWE, I take pleasure in seeing this contract renewed so early in the process. The agreement supports and advances CN's major business objective of sustained revenue growth through the delivery consistent, reliable service."

CN has six bargaining units, including the BMWE, representing seven unions in Canada whose three-year collective agreements expire on Dec. 31, 2000. These unions represent about 14,300 active CN employees.
