Canadian National Railway Canadian National Railway, rail system in Canada and the United States, extending from coast to coast in Canada with many branch lines in each province and in the United States. announced today a $5.4 million customer-service investment, in the form of a new Intermodal Terminal Management System. The technology, consisting of terminal management software and vehicle-mounted computer units, has been field tested and is already operational at CN's Vancouver Intermodal Terminal. Implementation is currently being completed at CN's Brampton Intermodal Terminal, near Toronto, Ontario. Plans also call for implementation at the company's Montreal Intermodal Terminal in June. CN Intermodal continues to be North America's fastest-growing intermodal unit. It recently reported an 11 per cent revenue increase for the first quarter of 1997, compared to the same period last year. The new intermodal Terminal Management System will support this increased traffic flow, and will serve as a catalyst for further growth. "This service investment will have significant payoffs in terms of customer satisfaction," says Craig Littzen, CN vice-president, Intermodal and Automotive. "CN's Intermodal Terminal Management System will accelerate our service by helping to reduce terminal delay for cartage cart·age n. 1. The act or process of carting. 2. It all adds up to reduced cycle times, lead times, and waiting times. It will also enhance our on-site storage capacity, as well as our car-utilization and heavy-equipment productivity." The new system guides truckers from delivery to pick-up. For incoming shipments, truckers are told where to leave containers or trailers. The technology also maintains up-to-date inventory records which help to target pick-ups by directing both driver and chassis to the right location. The system pays off on all counts: faster trucker turnaround, more effective loading and train-space usage, and better container and chassis utilization. CN's new system uses the OASIS terminal management program developed by Optimization Alternatives of Austin, Texas, as well as vehicle-mounted computer units supplied by Teklogix of Mississauga, Ontario For the First Nation, see . Mississauga (pronounced: [ˌmɪsɪˈsɑgə] listen . Similar systems have already been successfully implemented by other major rail carriers in both North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. and Australia. The CN's Intermodal Terminal Management System is one element of a company-wide commitment to use the most up-to-date technology for customer service enhancements. The new technology complements CN's Service Reliability Strategy (SRS SRS, SRS-A see slow-reacting substance. ) computer system, with its strong emphasis on customer-shipment tracking. Canadian National is Canada's largest and North America's sixth largest freight railroad, based on 1996 revenues of $4.2 billion. It serves all of Canada, including the key ports of Vancouver, Montreal, and Halifax, as well as Chicago and Detroit, with connections to all points in North America. Fact Sheet CN's Intermodal Terminal Management System TECHNOLOGY IN MOTION - Enhanced communications procedures and management tools to monitor performance and assign workload priorities on a timely basis. - Employs new software-hardware combination to maintain up-to-date container and trailer inventory. - High-level automation means greater accuracy, speed, and data-timeliness. - Harmonizes two key functions - the pick-up and delivery of containers and trailers to and from terminals by truck, and the loading and unloading of these same containers, and trailers to and from trains. - Incorporates terminal management software (developed by Optimization Alternatives of Austin, Texas), as well as mobile computer terminals (developed by Teklogix of Mississauga, Ontario) installed in the vehicles used to move trailers, containers and chassis within the terminal. - On-board On board usually means to be traveling on some vehicle. For example, Baby On Board. Compare with overboard. Metaphorically, the term on-board is often used to refer to some piece of technology that is integrated in a moving vehicle, for example: A NEW CUSTOMER SERVICE ADVANTAGE - Less effort spent searching or waiting for intermodal units. - Engineered to improve trailer pick-up and delivery times. - Improved train capacity and hitch-and-slot utilization. - Empty car reduction. - Labour and equipment productivity improvements. - Enhanced terminal and car utilization, thanks to on-board computer-generated work order information provided to all equipment operators.
