"The skill and experience of Transcona Shop employees speaks for itself," said Dennis Waller, CN's vice-president, Engineering and Mechanical. "Our skilled tradespersons are able to do high-quality work for major rail equipment upgrade suppliers, which is why we were awarded this major contract." The Transcona Shops will completely rebuild 24 GP38-2 locomotives. These locomotives were acquired from the U.S.- based Long Island Railroad. Once they have been upgraded, these locomotives will be leased to another railroad customer. Approximately 90 employees have been assigned to the locomotive upgrade program. The work includes modernizing the locomotive cabs, electrical systems, diesel engines and traction systems. The locomotives will also be completely repainted and equipped with new dynamic braking systems. LLP will take delivery of the first upgraded locomotive in April. The remaining locomotives will be delivered at the approximate rate of one a week throughout 2000. "The North American market for upgraded rail equipment is growing, and we know our Transcona Shops can deliver a top-quality and competitively-priced product," Waller said. "This is why we are making a major effort to land contracts such as this for Transcona. We plan to develop more ties with rail industry suppliers that can provide Transcona with a substantial volume of work." This is the second major contract that is awarded to the Transcona Shops. In 1999, more than 100 employees overhauled and upgraded 24 GP38 locomotives to GP38-2 configuration over a seven-month period. Transcona is one of CN's largest rolling stock maintenance facilities, employing close to 750 people. Transcona has four main shops specializing in cars, locomotives, traction motors and wheels.
