The $5-million, 60,000-square foot distribution center is equipped to handle rail-to-truck transfers of everything from paper and plastics to lumber and metals. The facility's main focus is paper products. Its high ceilings, smooth reinforced floors, inventory tracking and quality control capabilities are all designed to accommodate the efficient, seamless transfer of paper rolls. The center also features a 20-car lumber and metals transfer area, complemented by seven acres of outdoor storage, as well as a 48-car plastics transfer area. Terry McManaman, vice-president of CN's Gulf Division, said: "Memphis is the distribution crossroads of North America, with 43 per cent of America's population living within 600 miles of the city. CN's new distribution center will strengthen that role and offer area shippers new transportation choices. "CN's North American franchise reaches the major producing and consuming areas for papers, plastics, lumber and metals. With our new center, businesses in the Memphis catchment area now have new competitive sourcing options for a wide range of materials via CN - the rail industry's service and efficiency leader - and its partners in the Memphis-area trucking industry." The Memphis distribution center is the second such facility opened by CN this year. In July, CN's Metals Distribution Center in Hamilton, Ont. - a major steel-producing and consuming city in Ontario, Canada - began handling rail-truck transfers of metals, notably cold rolled and coated automotive and appliance-end-use coils.
