CMS Portable CD-ROM Drive Outperforms the Competition in Benchmark Tests; CMS 4X CD-ROM Drive for Notebooks 60 Percent Faster than Leading Drive.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 1996--Results of recent benchmark testing show the PlatinumPortable 4X external CD-ROM drive A device that holds and reads CD-ROM discs. CD-ROM drives generally also play audio CD discs by sending analog sound to the sound card via a 4-pin cable. For specifications of 10x, 20x, etc. drives, see CD-ROM drives. See CD-ROM, CD-ROM changer, CD-ROM server and CD-ROM audio cable.  from CMS (1) See content management system and color management system.

Enhancements to perform significantly faster than three of the top portable CD-ROM drives CD-ROM drives, which today typically means a CD-RW drive that is a combo CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW drive, come in a variety of speeds. The original drive (1x) transferred data at 150KB per second.  on the market, including a popular 6X drive.

CMS used Ziff-Davis PC Benchmarks to test the speed of the PlatinumPortable. "The Ziff-Davis Benchmarks are an industry standard and are well-respected," said Ken Burke, senior vice president and general manager.

The specific benchmark used was CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

WinMark 96, which measures the entire CD-ROM subsystem including the CD-ROM drive, the adapter, the software drivers required for operation, any software caches and the bus used to carry information from the controller to the processor.

The WinMark suite incorporates six of today's most popular Windows CD-ROM applications in business/productivity, reference/education and games/entertainment. The benchmark runs "scripts" in each of the applications and records application I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

operations, hard disk operations and CD-ROM applications. The program uses the various results to compute a weighted harmonic mean In statistics, given a set of data,

and corresponding weights,

W =

the weighted harmonic mean is calculated as

which gives an average transfer rate for the CD-ROM subsystem.

"In simple terms, this is a real-world measurement that shows actual CD-ROM performance while running typical applications," said Burke. "Bigger numbers mean better perfromance."

Benchmark Testing Results

The following displays benchmark of four portable CD-ROM drives on an IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  760 ThinkPad notebook computer A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous. : -0-

The PlatinumPortable plug-and-play drive is easily installed into a portable computer's PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card.  type II slot. The 4X PlatinumPortable features a 600KB per second transfer rate and 250ms average access time. The drive also features a 256KB buffer (cache) memory.

Designed to provide users with the benefits of CD-ROM access without unnecessary bulk, the top-loading PlatinumPortable drive measures 201.5mm length x 144.5mm width x 43.5mm height (7" length x 6" width x 1.75" height). The PlatinumPortable weighs 500 grams, or just over one pound.

The PlatinumPortable drive runs on six optional AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries, or through an auto-switching 100-250vac power supply extending the portable computer's battery life.

Mobile users can also enjoy creating their own exciting multimedia presentations with MediaWrangler, an easy-to-use multimedia software package bundled with the PlatinumPortable drive which enables users to combine pictures, video and text.
