Peripherals recently announced the addition of complete system bootability for their entire line of USB USB

 Plus (ABSplus) for Windows users.

Like CMS' PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card.  notebook version, the hard drives within the USB 2.0 and FireWire family are now fully bootable and removable. With the additional disaster recovery capability, ABSplus users have unmatched data security for their computers enabling failed hard drives to be quickly and easily replaced with the ABSplus hard drive.

In minutes, users can re-boot their system to find all of the applications, configurations and data intact as stored to the ABSplus during the last backup.

Providing hands-free, automatic backup and external storage in capacities ranging from 10GB to 120GB, CMS offers the new bootable feature in a choice of USB 2.0 connectivity for up to 480 Mb/s data transfer or FireWire for up to 408 Mb/s. Both interfaces offer users hot-swap capability and fast, easy data sharing The ability to share the same data resource with multiple applications or users. It implies that the data are stored in one or more servers in the network and that there is some software locking mechanism that prevents the same set of data from being changed by two people at the same time.  between multiple USB 2.0 or FireWire enabled notebook and desktop systems.

"The ABSplus was already the mobile user's most valuable piece of insurance against data loss," said Ken Burke, president of CMS Peripherals.

"The addition of complete system bootability further enhances the ABSplus' disaster recovery capability, making the user's data available even during a total hard drive failure. Also, users don't have additional software, base stations, batteries or media to purchase," continued Burke. "The ABSplus is a complete and easily portable solution."

Using the ABSplus is as easy as plugging in the included USB 2.0 or FireWire cable. For fast retrieval, solutions can be accessed as an additional drive letter or volume on the host computer. The high-speed data transfer capability of both USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces provides enough throughput for streaming audio A one-way audio transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web as well as company networks to play audio clips and Internet radio. Computers in home networks stream audio (mostly music) to digital media hubs connected to home theaters.  and video files.

To ensure regular backups, the ABSplus offers a pop-up window pop-up window n (Comput) → Popup-Fenster nt  that can be set to remind users that it is time to run another backup. Backups are performed in Native File Format providing fast, easy data recovery. Following the initial backup, only new or changed data is copied to the ABSplus.

Able to withstand non-operating shock up to 800 Gs and operating temperatures ranging from 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C, CMS' ABSplus is tough enough to hold up to even the most demanding travel conditions. Backup tasks can be configured for the entire system, or just specified files or folders.

To take advantage of any remaining hard drive space on the ABSplus, users can easily create additional file folders to store "occasional use" files and applications that don't need to remain on the host computer. The new bootability feature ensures disaster recovery of the entire system in only moments. USB 2.0 is fully backward compatible Refers to hardware or software that is compatible with earlier versions of the product. Also called "downward compatible." Contrast with forward compatible.

The entire line of ABSplus solutions support flexible data interchange, backup, archival and migration of data with one of the market's lowest total cost of ownership (TCO (1) (Total Cost of Ownership) The cost of using a computer. It includes the cost of the hardware, software and upgrades as well as the cost of the inhouse staff and/or consultants that provide training and technical support. See ROI. ). The new bootable Notebook ABSplus, with an interface choice of FireWire or USB 2.0 is now shipping with a three-year warranty in capacities of 10GB, 20GB, 30GB and 40GB. 60GB solutions will be available the end of March 2002.

Pricing starts at $279. PCMCIA interface is also available for Notebook users. Higher capacity Desktop ABSplus solutions with an interface choice of Firewire or USB 2.0 are available in capacities of 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB, 100GB and 120GB with a three-year warranty. Estimated street prices (ESP (1) (Enhanced Service Provider) An organization that adds value to basic telephone service by offering such features as call-forwarding, call-detailing and protocol conversion. ) start at $349.
