CMP's Windows Magazine, the leading PC publication for Windows NT managers, will expand its coverage of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT MSFT Microsoft (stock symbol)

and will begin testing all products it reviews not only on systems running Windows 95/98, but also on computers running on NT 4.0/5.0. The NT-based reviews, which give technology buyers a clear view of how new hardware and software products perform in a business setting, will begin appearing in Windows Magazine's August, 1998 issue.

Although Windows 95/98 is by far the mainstream business operating system The Business Operating System, or BOS, is an early cross-platform operating system originally produced for Intel 8080 and Motorola 6800 computers, subsequently for Z80-based computers, and then later for most microcomputers of the 1980s.  platform today, Microsoft says that Windows NT 5.0 will be the operating system powering business desktops in the years ahead. In fact, data from DataQuest seems to back up that notion. The research company projects that new end-user worldwide sales of Windows NT will double annually from 5.7 million units in 1997 to 14.1 million in 1998 and 28.2 million in 1999.

Associate Publisher/Editorial Director Patricia Schnaidt said readers' needs was a key factor in the publication's decision to test products on NT. "According to according to

the IntelliQuest Computer Industry Media Study, Windows Magazine is the leading monthly PC publication reaching business managers planning to purchase either Windows NT Server and/or Windows NT Workstation," said Schnaidt.

"Obviously, this means that NT hardware/software performance is very important to our readers. This is exactly the reason that we're going to be the first and only PC publication to give business professionals a consistent view of how their mission-critical hardware and software products perform under all major Windows operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. . We want to make it easy for business technology buyers to prepare for the transition to Windows NT."

Windows Magazine has been covering Windows NT longer than any other PC or Windows NT-specific publication, having launched its coverage with the industry's first Windows NT column back in April, 1992. Late last year the publication launch a Web site dedicated to the soon-to-be launched Windows NT 5.0 operating system (http://www.winmag.com/WindowsNT/).

When a vendor ships a product that is compatible with both Windows95/98 and Windows NT, Windows Magazine's editors will review the product under both operating systems, evaluating and reporting on usability, features and performance for both platforms. While the majority of the review will be geared toward the most commonly-used operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system.  for that product category, in most cases Windows95/98, reviews of many high-end applications and hardware will focus more on their performance under NT.

Additionally, barring a court order against Microsoft, Windows Magazine will begin reviewing all products using Windows 98 systems when the operating system ships on June 25.

CMP's Windows Magazine is an essential resource for more than 800,000 Windows technology buyers who look to the monthly publication for advice on what to buy and how best to integrate those products into their business. The publication features high-level, authoritative, product-focused coverage, including news, reviews, features, how-to's and opinionated o·pin·ion·at·ed
