CMG Licenses SMSC to Telet Celular; Brazilian Wireless Provider Telet will offer SMS to Porto Alegre.

CMG Telecommunications has announced that Telet Celular of Porto Alegre, Brazil, will now offer Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) based Short Messaging Service (SMS) to their customers. With this agreement CMG, an established market leader in the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology area, continues to rapidly gain market share in South American mobile technologies.

Telet, which began its activities in February 1999, is currently undergoing large-scale development and expansion, to support the increase in wireless traffic. In the coming months Telet will be covering more than 120 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. Presently Telet offers service to 110 cities within the state, covering 75% of its population. CMG's SMSC will provide Telet with the ability to capitalize on the growing demand for SMS in the region.

The CMG's leading Short Message Service Center (SMSC) software has been able to achieve a record breaking 2,500 messages per second, making it the most powerful SMS solution on the market. SMS in mobile networks transmits limited text or data from a network to a mobile phone and vice versa. Shorts Messages are economical, do not use the voice channel, do not disturb the receiver, and can be exchanged between mobile handsets. An SMSC, once integrated into a network, can guarantee message delivery while interconnecting with other terminals such as PCs, pagers and fax machines. Historically, the primary use of SMS has been to notify users of awaiting voicemail. Today, SMS is the basis for value added services, enabling subscribers to access email, stock quotes, and weather, among others. SMS is also one of the most important technologies currently available for the widespread deployment of the new Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) services.
