custom mixing capacity are over, as only four of the respondents to Rubber World's annual survey indicated a capacity increase is in the plans for this year. Kardoes Rubber, Polymerics, S&D Rubber and Valley Rubber are the only custom mixers out of the list of 73 who will expand this year. This compares to the 15 that undertook some form of expansion during 1993.

The survey indicated that custom mixing capacity increased almost 9% in 1993, reaching 3.8 billion pounds annually. It was the third straight yearly increase. But not much is in the works for this year. Even one of the announced expansions was iffy if·fy

Also, S&D merely acquired 12 acres with a 27,000 sq. ft. building in Hanover, MA, but did not mention other expansion plans. Polymerics will add shifts this year and Valley Rubber is adding 500,000 pounds of capacity this year, the same amount of increase they added in 1993.

Others adding capacity last year were: Beebe Rubber with an eight million pound expansion; Burton Rubber acquired Global Processing in Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe Springs, city (1990 pop. 15,520), Los Angeles co., SW Calif., inc. 1957. The city lies in an oil and natural gas region and has diversified manufacturing. , CA and its eight million pound capacity; Burke Industry installed a #3D internal mixer; Elastomix U.S.A. increased capacity 100% to 400 tons; and Polymerics added six million pounds of capacity.

The breakdown of the elastomers mixed remained pretty much the same, with SBR SBR - Spectral Band Replication  accounting for nearly one quarter of all custom mixed elastomers and EPDM EPDM Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer

The continuing diversification of many of the compounders was evident, as the number of places now mixing plastics almost doubled to 13 and there was a 33% increase in mixers mixing thermoplastic elastomers Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), sometimes referred to as thermoplastic rubbers, are a class of copolymers or a physical mix of polymers (usually a plastic and a rubber) which consist of materials with both thermoplastic and elastomeric properties. .

A list of North American custom mixers begins on the next page, which is followed by a directory of custom services suppliers other than mixing. Information contained shows address, types of elastomers mixed and types of equipment used in the mixing operations.
