``I always find time to do this,'' Bird said about the annual dinner. ``We put in six to eight hours each putting this together, and usually I'm the last one to leave,'' Bird said.

CalArts graduate student Margarette Alkire played the violin violin, family of stringed musical instruments having wooden bodies whose backs and fronts are slightly convex, the fronts pierced by two f-hole-shaped resonance holes.  on a stage in the dining room while Ray Graeber, the Lions Club president, organized volunteers arriving at the Market Street center to offer their assistance.

``It's fulfilling to know we make a couple hours of the day better,'' Graeber said about the club's guests. ``It's not that they can't afford to eat. It just gives them a place to go.''

The Lions club has sponsored the annual dinner for 20 years. Graeber said nearly 40 club members are usually joined by an equal number of other volunteers from the community to serve the meals. Lions Club members provide the food, Graeber said.

``We buy about 120 pounds of meat and lots of salads and fruit too,'' explained Bird, who said his name was once mistaken in a newspaper for that of the Larry Bird who finished his stellar career in the National Basketball Association National Basketball Association (NBA)

Wilma Biren of Newhall said the holiday dinner - a leisurely event with time to savor coffee and salad before the big meal - is usually the highlight of her Thanksgiving. Widowed three years ago, she said she enjoys the companionship.

``I have friends who are here, eating and helping out as well,'' Biren said.

A regular at the center throughout the year, Thelma Blanchard said the Lions Club volunteers are good cooks, and the food is tasty.

``It's good. Also, by coming regularly, you get to know everybody and have lots of friends, and the group is so lovely,'' Blanchard said.
