NEWHALL - A little bit of laughter is going a long way.

J.R.'s Comedy Club on Friday gave Fire Station 73 a check for $1,555 - recently raised during a Sept. 11 fund-raiser that will help the fire station upgrade some medical equipment.

``I wanted to do something positive, and I thought that after the moments of silence and the memorial services, and all the television coverage, that people would need a diversion that evening,'' Lubas said.

The show featured 11 comedians, including eight from the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. Fire Chiefs Mike Singer and Larry Hambleton were on hand to accept the donation, which Lubas requested be used to upgrade the station's defibrillator defibrillator, device that delivers an electrical shock to the heart in order to stop certain forms of rapid heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). The shock changes a fibrillation to an organized rhythm or changes a very rapid and ineffective cardiac rhythm to a  system.

``My father's life was saved by a defibrillator,'' Lubas said.

Lubas' father died 3 1/2 years ago, just as he was opening the club, but the defibrillator extended his life for seven years.

``It's great to see the community coming together to do something,'' said Inspector Kurt Schaefer of the L.A. County Fire Department. ``The Santa Clarita Valley has always been a very supportive community for its firefighters.''
