CLU TRIES TO BUILD MOMENTUM OFF FIRST WIN.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

The only part of its 1-3 record the Cal Lutheran football team cares to think about is the one win that came in last week's conference opener.

As Kingsmen coach Scott Squires told his team after the game, CLU (language) CLU - (CLUster) An object-oriented programming language developed at MIT by Liskov et al in 1974-1975.

The Kingsmen also have been reminded that the team's last Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.  Athletic Conference An athletic conference is a collection of sports teams, playing competitively against each other at the collegiate or high school level. In many cases conferences are subdivided into smaller and smaller divisions, with the best teams competing at successively higher levels.  title - in 1997 - came after a poor nonconference showing. CLU hopes its outlook remains as positive after hosting Claremont-Mudd today at 1 p.m.

The Stags (4-1, 1-1) are the surprise team of the SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability , having lost only to current conference leader La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand  a season after going 2-7. They have scored at least 23 points each game and are coming off a 41-10 win at Lewis & Clark.

The CLU defense, which is back at full strength with the return of the players who sat out last week for disciplinary reasons, has a variety of Claremont-Mudd players to worry about. Stags quarterback Bryan Banta has completed 58 of 110 passes for 926 yards with no interceptions and 12 touchdowns. Wide receivers Josh Walter and Joel Weiss have scored at least 30 points apiece, and running back Steve Grove leads a ground game that averages 152 yards. Ryan Mele is the SCIAC's sixth-leading rusher even though he is a receiver.

The Stags have the conference's second-best total defense (304.4 yards a game) but are faced with a Kingsmen offense that clicked last week as quarterback Chris Czernek connected with Geno Sullivan for two touchdowns and George Keiaho and Dorian Stitt both scored to lead the running game in a 48-12 win against Whittier.

The Western State Conference has a bye this week. In the Foothill Conference:

(2-3, 1-2) at Southwestern (4-1, 2-1), 5 p.m.: The Marauders' offense continues to sputter at the end of long drives. The defense, which at the start of the season had helped the team stay close, also has failed late in the game. Freshman running back Jason Anderson had a season-high 243 yards and a touchdown last week, but the offense took a shot when quarterback Justin Holtfreter left in the second quarter. Coach Brent Carder said the team has hit rock bottom and an improved attitude will help against an average Southwestern team.

The Apaches are led by running backs Brawley Evans, fifth in the conference with 81.6 yards per game, and Nate Banks, who averages 80.2 yards a game. Defensively, Southwestern is led by linebacker Darrell Barclay, named defensive player of the week for his performance against San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. Barclay had six solo tackles, a deflection and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
