CLU PAINT JOB.

Byline: Christopher Noxon Daily News Staff Writer

Student orientation for the new school year at California Lutheran University Mission statement
The University's mission statement is as follows:

"California Lutheran University is a diverse, scholarly community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts and professional studies.

 and some paint-splattered faces.

At the high point of their second day of orientation, 250 freshmen climbed up Mountclef Ridge to paint a formation of rocks that spell the letters CLU (language) CLU - (CLUster) An object-oriented programming language developed at MIT by Liskov et al in 1974-1975.

CLU is an object-oriented language of the Pascal family designed to support data abstraction, similar to Alphard.
. The job was left to maintenance workers until two years ago when a student peer adviser had the idea of turning it over to incoming freshmen.

``It's the neatest thing,'' said peer adviser Jamie Rempfur. ``You walk up there as a huge group and you get to know each other.''

The job took 50 paint brushes and 50 gallons of white paint. What would take one worker a full day took the freshmen less than an hour. Their reward came halfway down the mountain: 63 pizzas delivered by an overwhelmed o·ver·whelm

``It brings them all together,'' said peer adviser Dianna Miller. ``You get that unity thing going.''

The orientation program included a pep rally, a drive-in movie, a day of beach activities and a pancake pancake, thin, flat cake, made of batter and baked on a griddle or fried in a pan. Pancakes, probably the oldest form of bread, are known in different forms throughout the world.  breakfast served by the football team. There also were meetings with academic advisers, a welcoming speech by the university president and a speech about sexual harassment sexual harassment, in law, verbal or physical behavior of a sexual nature, aimed at a particular person or group of people, especially in the workplace or in academic or other institutional settings, that is actionable, as in tort or under equal-opportunity statutes. .

All of it helps bond the class together and ease the passage from home to university, said senior Michelle Levine.

``It can be really hard being away from your parents for the first time,'' Levine said. ``This totally helps. Everyone here gets thrown into the same activities. We're all in the same boat.''

Many workers were quick to discover other uses for the paint brushes and paint. Amy Beuthel, peer advisers coordinator, was surrounded by a trio named Teri, Kami and Kristi, who quickly covered her legs in random splotches. Others decorated themselves with handprints or nicknames.

``We're starting a tradition here,'' said Kyle Stalder, an 18-year-old freshman from Portland Oregon. ``All year we can look up here and say, we painted those letters. Now I'd like my pizza.''
