CLU NOTES: CLU OFF TO FAST START; REGALS FINDING THEIR CHEMISTRY.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

A glance atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) is a college athletic conference that operates in the NCAA's Division III. It consists of eleven small private schools which are located in Southern California and organized into eight athletic programs.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  standings reveals it all.

Entering Tuesday's conference game at home against La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand , Cal Lutheran was tied for first place with a 2-0 record. A victory against the Leopards (5-8, 0-2) would give the Regals a half-game lead over two-time champion Pomona-Pitzer, which has a bye.

It's never too soon to be excited about that.

``We're in first place, in that case I'm happy,'' coach Tim La Kose said. ``Our goal is to win the SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability .''

The Regals (6-6, 2-0) are jelling since the early going, when they started the season against tough opponents. CLU (language) CLU - (CLUster) An object-oriented programming language developed at MIT by Liskov et al in 1974-1975.

has won its last four, including a 67-62 victory Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the team's first victory there since December of 1989. It hasn't lost since a 76-63 setback at Chico State on Jan. 5.

The reasons? Junior center Missy Rider is coming of age, for one. The 6-foot post player is averaging a team-high 12.3 points a game, and she is looked to as the first option in the team offense.

Brandie Murrish, who missed most of the preseason training with a broken leg, is also making her presence felt. The team's top returning senior is averaging 14.0 points a game in the conference, five points better than her overall average.

``Murrish has stepped it up to the level we thought she'd be,'' La Kose said.

If CLU beats La Verne and Occidental, it would set up a showdown at Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday. The Sagehens (11-2, 2-0) are beating opponents by 15 points per game.

Men's hoop update: The Kingsmen (5-8, 1-1) evened their record in the SCIAC with a convincing 68-54 victory over Redlands at home Saturday.

Freshman standout Cory Johnson (Hart HS) missed the game with an back injury. Johnson is averaging 10.8 points and 4.3 rebounds a game for CLU, and has hit a team-high 30 3-pointers.

SCIAC stats: The Regals have the top three free throw shooters in the conference and six of the top eight. Freshman Lexi Miller is 16 of 17 this season, and her .941 clip leads Hilarie Jones (.917) and Missy Rider (.885).

CLU hit five free throws in the final 21 seconds to seal the victory against Claremont - Brandie Murrish hitting three and Miller adding two.

``It's something we work on and we have a lot of confidence,'' La Kose said.
