CLU NOTES: CAL LUTHERAN'S SQUIRES MAY BE CSUN CANDIDATE.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

Cal Lutheran football coach Scott Squires, who led the Kingsmen to a share of their first SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability  football title in 1997, is thought to be a serious candidate for the vacant Cal State Northridge head coaching position.

``I'm not going to comment on that,'' Squires said Monday, ``but it is very flattering.''

Northridge is considering a number of people for the job, left open when Jim Fenwick left to become offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. The interest in Squires is logical. CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  would like to continue its pass-oriented tendencies, and Squires' teams run a pro-style offense that is roughly 60 percent pass. The Kingsmen threw for 225.4 yards per game, averaging 366.7 yards per game on offense.

Squires is also a recruiting machine, bringing in 63 new players to last year's team that finished 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the SCIAC.

Nanhed will return: Running back Fredrik Nanhed, who missed last season with a knee injury, will return next year after obtaining a medical redshirt.

Nanhed, a senior from Malmo, Sweden, is fourth on CLU's career rushing list.

Shea on the Big Island: Cal Lutheran punter Jeff Shea is in Hawaii for Sunday's Hula Bowl, the preeminent college all-star game The Chicago Charities College All-Star Game was a preseason American football game played annually (except in 1974) from 1934 to 1976 between the National Football League champions and a team of star college seniors from the previous year.  in the nation.

Shea, one of only five players in NCAA Division III history to be a three-time All-American, is one of two Division III players on the North roster. Southern Oregon defensive end Jon Chamberlin is the other.

``This is a pseudo-tryout for him,'' said Squires, who leaves Wednesday to join his highly regarded punter for the game. ``Pretty much every pro scout from every pro team will be there.''

The big wins were nice, but nowhere near what the Regals did to Pacific Christian College (of Fullerton) on Nov. 30, 1993. CLU won that game 124-9, which still stands as the widest margin of victory in a women's basketball game in NCAA history.

Men's hoops set for SCIAC: Cory Johnson scored a team-high 19 points and Mike Salser added 17 in the Kingsmen's 80-56 loss to Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

It was the last preseason game for CLU (4-7), which opens the regular season today at two-time defending conference champ Pomona-Pitzer.

The Kingsmen have lost four of their last five.
