CLU NOTES: BLUSTERY WEEK FOR CLU GOLF; BASEBALL TEAM'S WIN STREAK STOPPED AT 12.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

It was a whirlwind week for the Cal Lutheran golf team, and that would mean both literally and figuratively.

Last Wednesday, the Kingsmen made their annual trip to Florida, playing two matches and braving the rains and winds of El Nino along the way. The team arrived home just in time to host the Kingsmen Golf Invitational at Simi Valley's Wood Ranch Golf Club.

Jon Manning shot a CLU-record 1-under 71 in the first of two rounds, finishing at 156 for 36 holes and in 11th-place overall.

``It was a lot of fun, but it was a lot of work,'' coach Jeff Lindgren said. ``It's been crazy.''

In Florida, the Kingsmen (5-1, 2-1 in SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability ) beat Palm Beach Atlantic 326-346 on Thursday, then fell to St. Thomas 312-347 at Doral Country Club.

``The one you see on TV is the Blue Monster course,'' Lindgren said. ``We played on the Silver Course, but the conditions were still supreme. It's interesting to play at golf courses in different parts of the country. You get to play on different grasses. And in Florida, almost every hole is surrounded by water.''

The Kingsmen (15-5) dropped three one-run games in the tournament, the last a 4-3 loss to Whitman (Wash.) in the seventh-place game Sunday.

On Saturday, CLU beat SCIAC foe Redlands 12-6 in the opening round of pool play, than it lost 8-7 to Lewis & Clark (Ore.) and 12-11 to Eastern Connecticut State after recovering from an 11-1 deficit.

The 12-game winning streak after the Redlands victory was the third longest in school history.

No fair: The Kingsmen baseball team had reason to protest the 8-7 loss to Lewis & Clark, when the Pioneers scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. The game was then called due to darkness.

Tournament rules stipulated any game incomplete would be finished at neighboring La Verne, a facility with lights. It didn't happen.

Donovan hits mark: Junior Kyle Donovan threw 157-11 in the discus, believed to be the second-best mark in Division III this season, all but qualifying him for the NCAA Division III national championships in St. Paul, Minn.

The throw, occurring Saturday in a meet at Point Loma Nazarene, was two feet short of the school record.

Softball update: The Regals (9-13) won three of six games at the Sun West Classic this past weekend in Orange.
