CLU NOTEBOOK: WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM TO TAKE HAWAIIAN TRIP.

team in the middle of its conference schedule, but the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team is going anyway.

The team leaves Friday night, plays games on Sunday and Monday, returns Tuesday and gets right back into conference play with a game against La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand  on Wednesday.

The team will play Hawaii Pacific on Sunday and Hawaii on Monday.

Hawaii Pacific ventured to the mainland last year to play the Regals. Their coach, Mark Kani, was instrumental in helping Cal Lutheran plan the logistics of its trip to the Islands.

``We did fund-raisers to get the money for the airline tickets,'' said coach Dan Kuntz. ``The rest is like a regular road trip.''

The fund-raisers took place last spring when the team hosted its 5-on-5 soccer tournaments. The players are involved in instruction, officiating and anything else that needs to be done.

The trip was approximately three years in the making, Kuntz said. That's how long Kani had tried to get Cal Lutheran to come to the Islands.

``Mark Kani has been very helpful,'' Kuntz said. ``He's taken care of a lot things that needed to be worked out.''

Kuntz noted that while the trip is to a resort destination, the Regals are going there with the purpose of winning both games.

``It's a tremendous educational experience,'' Kuntz said. ``The players get to see another culture and they will have the experience of being together and doing everything together, getting on and off a plane, picking up luggage LUGGAGE. Such things as are carried by a traveller, generally for his personal accommodation; baggage. In England this word is generally used in the same sense that baggage is used in the United States. See Baggage. , doing their homework in a hotel, playing in a new environment . . . everything. I believe soccer is truly a world ambassador and it helps people understand each other.''

of sorts for freshman Leilani Green. Green is from the Island of Maui and although the games will be played on Oahu, Green expects many friends and relatives.

``I was really happy when I found out about this trip,'' she said. ``I think it will be fun and can't wait for the rest of the team to see Hawaii.''

Green has relatives in the Honolulu area and is planning a team get-together.

``It would be nice to have some authentic Hawaiian food for everyone, some Kahlua pig or poi poi, slightly fermented, sticky food paste eaten in the Pacific islands, usually accompanied with meat, fish, or vegetables. It is made by grinding or pounding the roasted, peeled roots of the taro.
