The big talk came less than 48 hours after the Kingsmen, ranked No. 6 in the nation, clinched their third consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) is a college athletic conference that operates in the NCAA's Division III. CLU needed to take two of three games from the Bulldogs to secure the outright title, and it started on the right foot Friday with a 7-6 victory in Redlands.

Softball takes SCIAC: The baseball team isn't the only CLU team poised for the postseason. The Regals' softball team (27-17, 16-2) has won 13 of 14 games to take their fourth SCIAC crown in five years.

Cal Lutheran went 5-1 in the season-ending SCIAC Tournament to clinch the title, with victories over Claremont (2-0), Occidental (5-3), Pomona-Pitzer (11-0), Redlands (15-0) and Whittier (10-2) over the weekend.

It had to happen: Jenia Karimov, the Kingsmen's No. 1 singles player, had his streak of 28 consecutive victories snapped Sunday in the semifinals of the Ojai Invitational.

Karimov was 28-0 before falling 1-6, 6-1, 1-6 to Thomas Oechel of UC Santa Cruz, seeded second in the Division III portion of the tournament. Oechel lost in the finals to fellow Banana Slug Danny Kim.

Despite the loss, the Karimov should receive an invitation to the NCAA Division III Championships in Williamstown, Mass., May 15-20. The pairings are announced May 11.

Golf waiting: The Kingsmen (9-1) haven't competed since April 20, when they captured their sixth consecutive SCIAC title at the conference championships at Brookside Country Club.

CLU hopes to earn an NCAA bid to the May 12-15 championships at Emory University in Atlanta.

Track meet skipped: The CLU track and field team, scheduled to compete in this weekend's UC San Diego Invitational, will skip the meet to prepare for the Occidental Invitational on May 9.
