The Kingsmen, who reached the World Series last year, beat No. 1 seed George Fox of Oregon in the opening game but lost twice to Chapman to go 0-5-1 against the Panthers this season. Chapman advanced to this week's World Series in Appleton, Wis. The Panthers have dominated the regular-season series the past two years, going 6-1-1, but had lost three consecutive regional games to the Kingsmen. Chapman junior right-hander Eric Hayden changed the Panthers' postseason fortune. Hayden, who beat CLU two weeks earlier in a 13-4 game, did it again Friday. He scattered five hits in a 4-0 victory. CLU maintained its hopes of returning to the World Series when Tom Galante's fourth inning three-run home run sparked an 11-5 victory in an elimination game Saturday morning against host Southwestern. The 2-2 showing at the regional left CLU (28-14-2) with losses in six of its last eight games. --A bright spot: CLU's disappointing showing at the regionals, which wasn't made any better by rain that caused one of the Kingsmen's games to be pushed back a day and another to start late, was brightened by standout play from some players. One such player was junior right-hander Scott Courneya. He was named to the all-tournament team and earned the win against Southwestern to improve to 5-0. Courneya also had five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of relief against George Fox. --Canale finale? Junior right-hander Tom Canale is expected to be drafted next month and has indicated he will likely sign, meaning his relief appearance in Saturday's loss to Chapman was probably the end of his record-setting career as a Kingsmen. Canale is CLU's all-time leader in strikeouts and ranks among the leaders in several other categories. His win against George Fox improved his season record to 11-2 and moved him within one of Erik Kiszczak's school record of 26 career wins. --Washed out: The final day of last week's Division III men's golf championships in Battle Creek Battle Creek, city (1990 pop. 53,540), Calhoun co., S Mich., at the confluence of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek rivers; settled 1831, inc. as a city 1859.
