CLU MAKES ALL THE RIGHT MOVES AT ALL THE RIGHT TIMES IN VICTORY.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

Since taking over the Cal Lutheran University football program last year, Scott Squires has stressed the importance of players making big plays at crucial times.

Slowly but surely, the Kingsmen are heeding his words.

Last Saturday, a number of players stepped up at critical moments to lead Cal Lutheran to a convincing 34-7 win over La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand .

at the Leos 1-yard line to set the stage for a Dorian Stitt touchdown run.

On the fumble recovery, Robinson outhustled two La Verne players to gain possession.

``We don't normally time a guy's crawl time but Ricardo got after it on that play,'' Squires said. ``No question that's the kind of thing we thrive on.''

Another key play was turned in by defensive back Sean McGaughey, who teamed with Ryan Babcock to knock the ball loose from Ordell Williams at the Kingsmen 13-yard line. McGaughey fell on the loose ball to ruin La Verne's hope of taking a 14-3 lead. Six plays later, Cal Lutheran scored to take a 10-7 lead.

Blocking it out:It's unusual for a freshman running back to pick up the intricacies of pass-blocking in the pocket, but Stitt has accomplished just that in his first year.

Against La Verne, Stitt played a key role in negating the Leos' front pressure and blitzing linebackers, allowing quarterback Derek Brown time to pick apart the La Verne secondary.

When practice started in August, Stitt was not an accomplished blocker. Since then, he's developed into a good one.

``He's got a lot of football savvy,'' Squires said. ``He just knows what to do and when to do it. And he sure packs a punch for a freshman.''

Big goal:Kudos to former Newbury Park soccer star Kim Holeman, whose game-winning goal against Chapman on Monday vaulted her to fourth on the Cal Lutheran all-time goal list and fifth on the scoring list. Holeman has 39 career goals and 97 points.

``We won't go with him this week just to be on the safe side,'' Squires said. ``We want to make sure he's OK. Life's far more important than a football game.

It helps that quarterback is the Kingsmen's deepest position. Brown stepped in against La Verne and threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
