CLU LOOKS FOR FIRST WIN : KINGSMEN STAND GOOD CHANCE WITH TIGERS, COACH SAYS.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

After playing its worst game of the year in a 49-7 loss to Chapman on Oct. 12 - its fourth straight loss to start the season - the Cal Lutheran University football team decided this week that there was only one logical direction left: up.

``It's it's

``I think we've had our best week of practice since the season started,'' Huisenga said. ``Hopefully, we'll be able to carry that through and do a good job (today).''

It was an upbeat week of work for Cal Lutheran despite the embarrassing results against Chapman. By Thursday, coach Scott Squires seemed to have overcome the frustration and was eager to see how his club would perform against Occidental today.

Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mount Clef Stadium.

the record,'' Squires said. ``The important thing is how we step up as a team and how we respond to the challenges that are ahead of us.''

It helps that the Kingsmen are facing an Occidental team that seems similar to them in talent level. That's welcome news to Squires after playing the likes of powerhouses La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand , Azusa Pacific and Chapman the last three games.

Or as Squires has come to term that stretch of Cal Lutheran's schedule: ``Murderer's row.''

The Tigers are also seeking their first win of the year after dropping their fourth straight game last week to La Verne, 31-10.

Squires warns the Kingsmen not to be deceived by that score, though. Occidental was tied 10-10 with the Leopards going into the fourth quarter before self-destructing late.

Still, Squires senses that for the first time in four weeks, the Kingsmen will be coming into a game on seemingly seem·ing

equal footing with their opponent. And as long as they can take care of the ball and avoid costly mistakes, he sees no reason why this can't be the week in which Cal Lutheran finally gets a win.

``I sure hope so,'' Squires said, ``I think physically, we definitely match up with Occidental. I don't think we have anything to prove, we just want to play up to the expectations that we have of ourselves as a team. Last week we didn't do that. Hopefully this week we can.''

The first step in that direction is establishing a consistent running game. Once again, the Kingsmen will be without running back Fredrik Nanhed, but Billy Busch has done a respectable job in his place and Squires hopes to get him off and running early.

``I'm happy with the way we've passed the ball, but we need to get a running game going,'' Squires said.
