After winning the tough Cal Poly Pomona Tournament to begin the season, however, the Regals beset by injuries, finished 15-10 and 7-5 in the SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability , good for fourth place. Respectable for most, but up to the expectations on the Thousand Oaks campus. ``We started off strong but we didn't have the depth to respond,'' said La Kose, who had turned the program into winners in just his fourth season. ``It was a real disappointing season for us.'' To assure that wouldn't happen again, La Kose went out and recruited what he called his best freshman class. With the return of starters Brandie Murrish and a healthy Missy Rider, the combination could vault a young Cal Lutheran back to the top of the SCIAC. Murrish, along with Monika Nagy the only senior on the roster, averaged 13.7 points and 8.0 rebounds last season. She recorded a triple-double against Occidental and was a second team all-SCIAC. ``We're pretty young,'' Murrish said. ``But it's kind of fun. We're coming together really well right now. People are working hard in practice.'' She joins Rider, who started all 25 games in 1996-97 and is recovered from off-season knee surgery. She scored 6.5 points a game in 1996-97. Allred added 3.4 points and 3.6 assists per game as the Regals' point guard, starting in all 25 games. They will have to share the load left over from three departing starters, including Evi Orologas (16.9 ppg, 9.1 rpg) and Melissa Wood, who set all of CLU's three-point records last year. Immediate help will come from 5-foot-5 guard Monica Flores Flores, town, Guatemala Flores (flōrəs), town (1990 est. pop. 2,200), capital of Petén department, N Guatemala. We're excited to get this season started.'' The depth has extended further. For the first time, Cal Lutheran will have a JV team. The Regals, who expect to play a more up-tempo game on both ends of the floor, will need the depth to stay fresh. They will also need it for a rugged early-season schedule. Cal Lutheran opens the season Nov. 21 at the St. Chapelle/Lady 'Yote Classic in Idaho, the school's first trip outside the state in La Kose's four seasons. After playing host Albertson College, the Regals meet Northwest Nazarene, the defending NAIA NAIA abbr. National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes champions. The Regals also play traditionally strong teams like Chapman, Chico State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which won the NCAA Division III title two seasons ago. That all happens before the SCIAC season-opener at Whittier Jan. 13. Defending champion Pomona-Pitzer is considered the conference favorite.
