After an 0-3 start, the Cal Lutheran football team looks to turn its season around when it opens Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) is a college athletic conference that operates in the NCAA's Division III.  those last three games out,'' wide receiver Josh Salic said. ``That's really all you can do.''

Positives the Kingsmen don't want to forget include Chris Czernek taking over as the starting quarterback and completing 55 of 95 passes for 529 yards, George Keiaho and Dorian Stitt ranking among the conference's top four rushing leaders and Mark Kevern providing the ninth-best Division III

punting average (40.51 yards) in the nation.

But there are many things the Kingsmen hope are behind them. Czernek has thrown five interceptions and the young offensive line has struggled to keep him from being sacked. The offense has committed seven fumbles and has not scored a touchdown in the past six quarters. The defense, meanwhile, ranks near the bottom of the SCIAC, giving up an average of 379.7 yards a game.

Unlike the nationally ranked team CLU opened the season against or the Division I-AA competition it faced in the second game, the Poets (0-3) have easily exploitable weaknesses of their own.

Whittier's ground game has produced just 89 yards this season and opponents have run wild against a defense that has given up 729 rushing yards and allows a combined average of 385 yards a game. Opponents have scored at least 40 points in each of the Poets' first three games, including a 45-0 conference loss to La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand .

Youth is among the biggest problems. Quarterback Steve Luce, last year's SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year, was one of several seniors on Whittier's 1998 7-2, 5-0 team. All-conference wide receiver Jeremy Snyder, running back Marcel Marcel

Desir and six All-SCIAC players on defense are also gone.

Sophomore Nick Tomasello replaced Luce and has completed 47 of 115 passes with seven interceptions for 564 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Otis Carmichael (20 receptions, 215 yards, 2 TDs) and sophomore Craig Tortorici are Tomasello's primary targets.

A 13-point loss to Menlo is the closest the Poets have come to a win.

Last week's 45-32 loss to Menlo was the closest yet for a team that has been outscored 128-45.

Each had seven tackles in the 28-3 loss at Whitworth. Oviedo, a linebacker from Moorpark, made five solo tackles, including two for losses.

Outlook: After two weeks on the road and a bye, this is CLU's best chance yet for a win. The Kingsmen lead the overall series 10-3 but are just 4-3 in the last seven meetings with the Poets, including a 16-13 loss last year.
