The Pioneers got a new coach and a new attitude this season when Dean Borth moved from the junior-varsity team. The former Royal standout expects wins and teaches his players to do the same. ``We respect him more,'' Williams said. ``He knows a lot about volleyball and he's a good player. He's got a lot more determination to win and it rubs off on us. ``Not until recently did I really want to get better. I was just playing to have fun. This year I'm really trying.'' The Pioneers' desire to win intensified in·ten·si·fy v. in·ten·si·fied, in·ten·si·fy·ing, in·ten·si·fies v.tr. 1. To make intense or more intense: after falling just short of the playoffs last season. They went 8-6 in league and finished fourth. ``It made us really mad because we were so close,'' Williams said. ``That was the best team we had had, yet we still didn't make it. We felt we were robbed.'' As well as the Pioneers are doing, they are far from their best. ``We're an unbelievable team when we're on fire,'' Williams said. ``But when we aren't, we struggle. We're not even close to our best. When we hit our peak, that's when everyone will hear about Simi Valley volleyball. When we get our consistency and everyone is playing to their potential, we'll explode.'' Williams and senior opposite hitter Dustin Pierson are among the Pioneers' brightest spots after playing through much of the offseason. Senior Kurt Mjoen, a 6-foot-4 middle blocker, is playing volleyball for the first time since his freshman year. He decided to concentrate on basketball the past two years but is relying on his work ethic work ethic n. That'll be the combination we go with the most.'' The Pioneers have league wins over Newbury Park, Moorpark and Agoura. They need to learn to maintain intensity if they hope to continue the streak. ``I've been pretty unpleased with what I've seen,'' Borth said. ``One of these days we'll click. It'll be scary when we do.'' Exchange student Oliver Bell carried last year's team. The balance and chemistry of this season's team is much improved. ``Last year, it was just Oliver,'' Pierson said. ``Nobody else could really hit. There wasn't anybody to really step up. This year everyone can hit.'' One of the few concerns this year is height, since most of the Pioneers are 6-foot-1 or shorter. ``That's the one thing we don't have,'' Borth said, ``but I wouldn't trade the players I have.'' Simi Valley isn't counting on a league championship but expects to remain in contention for second with Moorpark and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. I know how good they are. I know how good they know they are. That's the one thing that sets Royal apart, their confidence.'' The Pioneers play at Royal on Friday. ``I love the rivalry,'' Williams said. ``I think it makes us better. If we play at our peak, play real consistent, we'll do real good. ``Royal's not the only good team anymore.''
